Summary: Jesus continues His sermon on the Beatitudes of His followers.

The Sayings of Jesus Part 2

Matt. 5:7-12

Last week we discussed the first four of the Beatitudes and identified these four attitudes are that which takes place inwardly. These are I believe are necessary in order for us to demonstrate the other four attitudes in a way in which it will pleasing unto our Lord.

Recap Last Week:

• Blessed are the poor in spirit (Vs.3)

Salvation begins with us seeing our true spiritual condition.

Mention: Luke 18:9-14 It was the publican that said he was a sinner that was justified

• Blessed are they that mourn (Vs.4)

God will deliver us from a sinful condition unless we become broken over it.

“Be merciful to me a sinner”

Point: It hard to be broken over our condition when we are looking at others

• Blessed are the meek

Those that are meek submit themselves to the lordship and leadership of Christ.

Meek= Teachable, to be humble

See: Psalms 25:9 The meek He will guide…and teach His way

• Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness

There should be a desire in every believer’s heart to live a life that will be pleasing unto the Lord.

“For they shall be filled” Perhaps this mean controlled by the Spirit of Righteousness

The next four Beatitudes are external actions because of what has transpired inwardly.

See: Vs.7 Blessed are the merciful…

1. Be Merciful

Merciful= Not to just show pity for but to be actively compassionate

Mention: Luke 10:37 Which was neighbor unto him…He that shewed mercy on him.

“For he shall obtain mercy”

See: James 2:13

See: Matt. 18:32-35

See: Psalms 18:25

And: Proverbs 11:17

See: Vs.8 blessed are the pure in heart…

2. Search Your Heart

To be pure in heart is to have the right motives at heart

Mention: Proverbs 4:23 for out of our heart are the issues of life

Listen we are all capable of wrong doing but in the depths of our most inner being should be good intentions.

Mention: Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God renew a right spirit within me.

“For they shall see God”

3. Be A Peacemaker

See: Mark 9:50

See: Romans 12:17-18

And: Romans 14:16-19

A peacemaker not only seeks peace with others, but ultimately wants to bring about peace between others and God.

See: Romans 10:15 preaching the gospel of peace

See: 1 Peter 3:10-12 Let him seek peace and ensue it

See: Matt 5:10-12

4. Expect Persecution

Mention: 2 Tim. 3:12 Yea all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution

Also: 1 Peter 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye…

Vs.12 So persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Jesus in His first big public address challenges every listener that seeks after true happiness to demonstrate these attitudes in their everyday living.
