Psalm 40:1-10 THE PIT
I. The Rescue by God (1-3);
i. The Grievous Condition - 2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
A. The Grief of Sin - He brought me up also out of an horrible pit,
B. The Grave of Sin - Psa.28:1 Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my rock; be not silent to me:
lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.
(used to speak of the grave)
C. The Grip of Sin - out of the miry clay,
A Hopeless, Helpless, and Heartless Condition
ii. The Gracious Condescension -
2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit,
A. The Deliberation in the Pit - 1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
B. The Descent into the Pit - “He brought me up.”
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
C. The Deliverance from the Pit -
2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit,
iii. The Glorious Conversion - 3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
A. The Magnitude of the Blessing.

Divine in Character, in Content, & in Condition.
B. The Magnificence of the Blessing.
It is Evident - 3 many shall see it,
It is Eminent - and fear
It is Exultant - and shall trust in the Lord.
C. The Multitude of the Blessing.
3 many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
2. The Resources in God - 5 Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. His Blessings Toward Us Are :-
a. Widespread - "Many"
b. Witnessed - O Lord my God,
c. Wonderful - "are thy wonderful works"
d. Worthy - "which thou hast done"
e. Wise - thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee:
f. Welcome - If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered
3. The Responses to God (6-10).
i. The Rejection of Formalism - 6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
ii. The Reception of Faith - 7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, 8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
iii. The Revelation of Fitness - 9 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest.
iv. The Reflection on Favour - 10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart;
I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation:
I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.
