Introduction
October 1991 a fishing boat named the Andrea Gail sailed from a New England port to fish for swordfish. On their return, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean they faced a hurricane named Grace. Waves that measured 10 stories high, winds up to 120 mph. Meteorologist called this hurricane, Grace the “Perfect Storm”. Not knowing their decision to travel through the hurricane would cost them their lives.
Many times in our lives, unbeknownst to us without any warning a storm occurs. This passage gives us the perfect example of our lives in the storm.
We all will face storms in our lives. No one has a life without storms.
I. REMEMBER THE PROMISE OF JESUS.
A. v. 35 Let us cross over.
B. His commandments are always inablements.
C. Whatever God has called you to do, He will bring to fulfillment.
D. The disciples could not drown because the were in the presence of Jesus.
II. REST IN THE PRESENT OF JESUS. V.36
A. Compare with other gospels, the other boats are not mentioned. We must remember as we face storms in our lives others might be with us. These others could not get enough of Jesus.
B. The Sea of Galilee is a basin. Cold winds come down from the mountains & hit the hot air rising from the water, & it’s not unusual for storms to occur suddenly.
C. They were not in the storm for disobeying, but for obeying.
D. V.38 Jesus was asleep in the boat.
Why? Because He was @ peace.
“There is no panic in heaven.” God does not worry about how to solve our problems.
God is not in heaven wondering how Did Tim get into this mess, or How will I get him out of this mess.
III. RELY ON THE POWER OF JESUS. V.39
A. Jesus rebukes the storm. Peace be still. My translation “sit down & shut up”.
B. Psalms 107:29 “He calms the storm that it’s waves are still”
C. He didn’t keep the waves from striking the boat, but did keep the boat from sinking.
We will face storms in our lives. We will face them in two ways, with fear or faith.
Finding Humor in God’s Word.
***Only time in the bible Jesus slept & the disciples woke Him.
Close: I don’t know how folks face storms, trials, and troubles without Christ in their lives. We have no other hope. OTHER THAN JESUS
