THE NAME ABOVE EVERY NAME

Phil. 2:5-11

Shakespeare tells us that there is nothing in a name. “A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” He is wrong.

If I gave you a check for a million dollars – it would be worthless. But a similar check with Rockefeller’s signature would be of great value.

Names means something.

Moses – the Great Lawgiver – burning bush

David – Shepherd boy became King – Wanted to build Temple for God

Solomon – Wisdom and Wealth – Did build Temple for God.

Prov. 22:1

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.

Let us so live that when people hear our name they will be reminded of goodness and usefulness and Christ Himself.

Today I want to present to you the greatest name ever to grace Heaven, ever to be spoken on Earth.

It is a name that has been spoken by almost every language, lisped by babies, whispered in the hour of death.

It is the blessed, wonderful name of Jesus.

Jesus, O how sweet the name

Jesus, Every day the same

Jesus, Let all saints proclaim

It’s worthy praise forever.

I. HIS NAME IS A SAVING NAME

The angel told Joseph:

Matt. 1:21

Thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

A. He said He would save us

Isa. 45:22

Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.

Those far removed from God. Lowest, vilest sinner in all the world invited to come to Jesus and be saved.

Isa. 1:18

Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.

Luke 19:10

The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which is lost.

B. He has saved many of us

Felt the power of the Holy Spirit in conviction. Repented of our sins, put trust in Christ. Now child of God.

Satan may try to cause doubt – take him back to where you said yes to Jesus. Wherever it was, Church, home, hillside, etc.

C. He has saved others

George Whitfield – bar tender in England – saved and became preacher who has a part in conversion of over 70,000 souls for Jesus.

Dwight L. Moody – shoe salesman Billy Sunday – baseball player

Gaderean demoniac Billy Graham

R.G. Lee

The SAVING NAME of JESUS.

II. HIS NAME IS A PRECIOUS NAME

1 Pet. 2:7

Unto you therefore which believe, he is precious.

Not to unbelievers.

Name of wife, child, etc. precious, but Jesus is most precious.

A. Because Of What He Has Done.

Lifted us from the muck and mire of sin.

Lincoln – log cabin to the White House

Woodrow Wilson – Preacher’s parsonage to White House

Herbert Hoover – Blacksmith’s cottage to the White House

Christ done more – lifted us from our low estate and lifted us to heights higher than angels.

B. Because Of What He Is Doing Now

1. Keeping us in the hollow of His hand

We’re His never to perish

2. Answering our prayers

Always hears – always answers – not necessarily the way we want

3. Interceding for us.

Heb. 7:25

He ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Man is on trial – knows he’s guilty, faces fine –gets to court and discovers fine has been paid by friend. He’s happy.

Jesus paid our penalty, day to day makes intercession for us to the Father.

C. Because of What He Will Do

John 14:1

I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may be also.

Eye has not seen nor ear heard, mind not imagined what God is preparing for us.

III. HIS NAME IS A COMFORTING NAME

Let not your heart be troubled, Put all your trust in me.

A. His Name is a Comfort in Time of Sorrow

All of us have valley of tears and sorrow

Friends can not help much, But name of Jesus stills our sorrow, and helps our grief.

1. Mary and Martha when Lazarus died

2. The widow of Nain at her son’s death

B. His Name is A Comfort When We Are Dying

If the Lord doesn’t come soon – many of us will experience death.

We will want Him close by when our feet reach the icy waters of the River of Death.

IV. HIS NAME IS A CONQUERING NAME

A. Conquering Paganism – Heathensim

In New Hebrides Island – there is a tablet on the Presbyterian Church that says:

“When Rev. John Geddie came here in 1846 there were no Christians on the island. When he left in 1872 there were no heathen.”
