2. One of the most common symbols for the early church was a boat or ship on the water — and often pictured not on calm water but on rough seas. In fact, the word “nave,” which architecturally refers to the main portion of a church sanctuary, comes from the Latin word navis, which means ship. The main worship space of many churches was intentionally built to resemble a ship, or more specifically, Noah’s Ark. As people facing persecution because they were part of the church, Matthew’s readers understood that their ship — the church — was being battered quite severely. In fact, the original Greek reads that the boat was “being tortured” by the waves. Ships mast forms a cross in many images of a ship. Duke Divinity school

Jesus Walks on the Water the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” He is the Master of the seas

• The master of the seas walks on water towards the ship or church he came walking toward them on the sea says the text

• The Master of the Sea climbed into the lion’s den with Daniel,

5. We may ask ourselves what is the message in the text?

• Is it If we have enough faith, we will be able to do things as miraculous as Jesus did.”

• Is it if Jesus walked on water and we can to because Peter did

• Maybe the message is despite the battering of our lives and how much deep water we find ourselves in Jesus comes to us like he did on the sea of Galilee

• Maybe the message is that Jesus doesn’t leave us on the stormy sea of life alone

• Maybe the message is He sails with us

• Maybe the message is He is there when waves batter, torture the ship .

• Maybe the message is he will help us guide us to land on heaven shore

• When Jesus is in the ship the winds the waves stop and
