THE LORD’S PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
I. SALVATION v. 1-3
THE SALVATION OF THE LOST
a. THE LORD’S MISSION WAS TO SAVE
Luke 19:10 the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.
b. HIS DESIRE IS FOR OUR SALVATION
II Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his word, . . . but he is waiting in mercy for you, not desiring the destruction of any, but that all may be turned from their evil ways.[BBE]
II. PRESERVATION v. 9-11
THE PRESERVATION OF THE SAVED
a. HE PRAYS AS OUR HIGH PRIEST
Hebrews 7:25 he is able to save completely {Or for ever} those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
b. HE PRAYS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL
Luke 22:31 & 32 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you {The Greek is plural.} as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
III. JUBILATION v. 13
THE JOY OF THE SAVED
a. HE SEEKS OUR CONSTANT JOY
John 15:11 I have told you this so that you can share my joy, and that your joy may be complete. [JBP]
b. HIS JOY IS OUR STRENGTH
Nehemiah 8:10 This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
IV. SANCTIFICATION v.17
THE SANCTIFICATION OF THE SAVED
a. WE HAVE A PART IN SANCTIFICATION
I Peter 3:15 in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.
in your hearts consecrate Christ as Lord [Wey]
b. OUR PART LEADS TO GOD’S PART
II Timothy 2:21 If therefore a man keeps himself clear of these latter, he himself will be for specially honourable use, consecrated, fit for the Master’s service, and fully equipped for every good work. [Wey]
V. UNIFICATION v. 21
THE UNITY OF THE SAVED
a. THAT OTHERS MAY BELIEVE
John 17:21 Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
b. THAT GOD MAY RECEIVE GLORY
Psalm 34:3 Glorify the LORD with me: let us exalt his name together.
VI. PERFECTION v.23
THE PERFECTING OF THE SAVED
a. MADE PERFECT THROUGH HIS WORD
II Timothy 3:16& 17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
b. MADE PERFECT THROUGH OUR WORKS
James 2:22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
VII. TRANSLATION v.24
THE TRANSLATION OF THE SAVED
a. HIS PROMISE IS SURE
John14:3 I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
b. OUR PREPARATION IS NEEDED
I John 3:3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.
