Good morning, beloved family of faith. It's a joy to gather with you today, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share God's Word with you. We are here to worship, to learn, and to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In our time together, we are going to focus on a familiar passage of scripture. It's a story that you may have heard since you were a child, a story that has been depicted in countless Sunday school classrooms and sermon illustrations. It's the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, a miraculous event recorded in three of the four Gospels.
Let's read together the accounts from Matthew, Mark and John.
The pursuit: The people in the story pursued Jesus. They followed Him to a remote place because they recognized their need for Him. They knew that He could provide for them in ways that no one else could. They were willing to leave their comfort zones and venture into the wilderness because they trusted in His ability to provide.
The Provider: Jesus is our Provider. He is the One who meets our needs. In the story, He fed the five thousand with just five loaves of bread and two fish. He took what was insufficient and made it more than enough. He took what was ordinary and made it extraordinary. In our lives, Jesus does the same. He takes our insufficiency and makes it sufficient. He takes our ordinary and makes it extraordinary. He takes our lack and turns it into abundance. He is our Provider, and He is more than enough for us.
The provision: In the story, the provision was physical. Jesus provided food for the hungry. But the provision was also spiritual. He provided healing for the sick. He provided hope for the hopeless. He provided peace for the troubled. In our lives, the provision is also both physical and spiritual. Jesus provides for our physical needs. He gives us food to eat, clothes to wear, and shelter to live in. But He also provides for our spiritual needs. He gives us healing, hope, and peace. He gives us love, joy, and faith. He gives us everything we need for life and godliness.
The response: In the story, the people responded to Jesus' provision with gratitude. They ate and were satisfied. They recognized the miracle that had taken place and they were amazed. In our lives, we too must respond to Jesus' provision with gratitude. We must eat and be satisfied. We must recognize the miracles that take place in our lives and be amazed. We must give thanks to our Provider for His abundant provision.
