The Life Of Excuses

Summary: In all areas of our life, we can not help but notice that some folks are better at doing some things than others are.

For example, this is certainly true, when it comes to:
• Sports
• Academics
• Cooking
• Building
• Teaching
• Saving money
Sad to say, but this is also true when it comes to lying. Some are much better at telling lies than others are. Some people lie so much, that you know they are lying if their lips are moving. Some are so good at lying, they even convince themselves with their lies.
Illus: A police officer pulled a fellow over for speeding and had the following exchange:
Officer: May I see your driver's license?
Driver: I don't have one. I had it suspended when I got my 5th DUI.
Officer: May I see the owner's card for this vehicle?
Driver: It's not my car. I stole it.
Officer: The car is stolen?
Driver: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I saw the owner's card in the glove box when I was putting my gun in there.
Officer: There's a gun in the glove compartment?
Driver: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and killed the woman who owns this car and stuffed her in the trunk.
Officer: There's a BODY in the TRUNK?
Driver: Yes, sir.
Hearing this, the officer immediately called his captain. The car was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain approached the driver to handle this tense situation:
Captain: Sir, can I see your license?
Driver: Sure. Here it is. It was valid.
Captain: Who's car is this?
Driver: It's mine, officer. Here's the owner' card. The driver owned the car.
Captain: Could you slowly open your glove box so I can see if there's a gun in it?
Driver: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it. Sure enough, there was nothing in the glove box.
Captain: Would you mind opening your trunk? I was told you said there's a body in it.
Driver: No problem. Trunk is opened; no body.
Captain: I don't understand it. The officer who stopped you said you told him you didn't have a license, you stole the car, you had a gun in the glove compartment box, and that there was a dead body in the trunk.
Driver: Yeah, I'll bet the lying rascal also told you I was speeding.
But also, I regret to say this, some of the biggest liars in the country are in Washington, DC. They can look into the television camera and say with all sincerity, “I did not have sex with that woman!” and all the time they are lying.
Politicians are known for their lies.
Illus: Someone tells the story of a busload of politicians driving down a country road when, all of a sudden, the bus ran off the road and crashed into a tree in an old farmer's field.
The old farmer, after seeing what had happened, went over to investigate. He then proceeded to dig a hole and bury the politicians.
A few days later the local sheriff came out, saw the crashed bus, and asked the old farmer where all the politicians were.
The old farmer said he had buried them.
The sheriff asked the old farmer, "Were they all dead?"
The old farmer replied, "Well, some of them said they weren't, but you know how those politicians lie, you can’t believe a thing they say."
But you can also find some (I want to emphasize the word “some”) very good liars in the church, and you can’t believe anything they say either. In fact, some are as good as those you will find in Washington, DC.
WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? These are people who have built their life on making excuses.
They live their life as they want to live their life, continuously violating the commands of God, and they come up with some ridiculous excuses. They call them excuses, but they are no more than lies.
Illus: These excuses makes me think of how it was many years ago in high school. If you did not want to go to school, you would skip school, and the next day get some girl in the class to write you an excuse, such as, “Please excuse ___________, one of his relatives passed away and he had to attend the funeral.”
But one boy was called into the office, and the principal said, “I want to talk to you about your missing so much school. According to these excuses, this year you have lost four of your grandparents, five aunts, three uncles and ten cousins.”
The boy looked at the principal and said, “Yes, it has been a very bad year for the family.”
The principal did not buy that, but he stuck to his story.
There are people who live their life DOING AS THEY PLEASE, and MAKING EXCUSES as they go through life. These are people who have never learned that there is a difference between A REASON and AN EXCUSE.
