This sermon explores the humility of Jesus as our King, challenging us to honor Him in unexpected places and trust in His sovereign ways.
Good morning, beloved congregation. It's a blessing to be gathered here, in the house of our Lord, to share in the wisdom and beauty of His Word. Today, we will be turning our hearts and minds to a remarkable passage in Scripture, one that speaks of humility, royalty, and honor in ways that challenge our worldly understanding.
Our sermon today will focus on Zechariah 9:9 and Matthew 21:1-7. Zechariah prophesied, "Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." Many years later, Matthew records the fulfillment of this prophecy in the humble entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.
First, consider the choice of transportation. A donkey, in the time of Jesus, was a common beast of burden. It was used for carrying goods, not for carrying kings. Yet, this is the animal that Jesus chose for His entry into Jerusalem. This was a deliberate choice, meant to send a clear message. Jesus was not coming as a conquering king, but as a servant king. He was not coming to dominate, but to serve.
Second, consider the crowd that accompanied Jesus. These were not the elite of society. They were not the powerful or the influential. They were ordinary people, the kind of people that society often overlooks. Yet, these are the people that Jesus chose to have by His side. This too was a deliberate choice, meant to send a clear message. Jesus was not coming to cater to the powerful, but to minister to the weak and the marginalized.
Third, consider the reaction of the people in Jerusalem. They did not recognize Jesus as their king or who He was or what He had come to do. Yet, Jesus did not let their lack of understanding deter Him. He continued on His path, knowing that His mission was not to be popular, but to be faithful to the will of His Father.
Finally, consider the prophecy that was fulfilled in this humble arrival. Zechariah had foretold of a king who would come to Jerusalem, "righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey." Jesus fulfilled this prophecy to the letter, demonstrating that He was indeed the promised Messiah, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
