Summary: This is the 15th sermon in the series "3:16- Numbers That Bring Hope".

There are a number of places of importance mentioned in the Bible that are associated with the Fountain Gate. Some of these places could only be reached by passing through this gate. The King’s Pool, (The Pool of Siloam is where Jesus told the blind man to wash and receive his sight); The King’s Garden The Steps to Zion; The Tomb of David; and The Fountain at the Gihon Spring.

The Fountain Gate got its name from the fact that it was the primary access to the Fountain located at the Gihon Spring. This spring was Jerusalem’s only really reliable source of water. In times of drought, the Gihon Spring would still flow freely.

As we go through the Fountain Gate, we find traits of a maturing believer. Without water, you will die. We also need spiritual water flowing through our lives. Let me ask you this morning, “What is flowing out of you”? See, what is going on around you is not very important compared to what is flowing out of your life. Is what flowing out of you living, dead, or stopped up? A maturing believer allows the Holy Spirit of God to be filled in their life to a point that the Holy Spirit is overflowing from their life.

Nehemiah 3:26 (NIV)

“And the temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate toward the east and the projecting tower.”

7. The Word of God.

The water gate was used to bring water into the city. Although there was a spring of water and an aqueduct that brought some water into the city; it didn’t bring all of the water in. The rest was carried in through the water gate.

Often God’s Word refers to itself as “water”. We also need to notice that this is the 7th gate mentioned. The number 7 is the number of perfection and completion; and the only way we might be completely perfect is to grow in God’s Word. It is also important to note that this is the only gate that needed “No repairs”. There are many today who try to “improve the Word of God”. In Scripture, water often represents the Word of God and it is at this gate where the Word of God was read to the people.

Nehemiah 3:28 (NIV)

“Above the Horse Gate, the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house.”

8. Spiritual warfare.

This was the gate where the Kings of Israel would pass with their chariots and horses as they went to and from the palace. When they left the city to do battle, they would ride out at the head of the army. When the battle was over and the victory was won they would come back in through the Horse Gate either riding in the victor’s chariot or riding on a white charger to signify that they were the conqueror of their enemies.

We are in a spiritual battle all of the time. You may not see it that way; but it is still happening. If you want to be victorious, put on the full armor of God; and stand firm.

Nehemiah 3:29 (NIV)

”Next to them, Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. Next to him, Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, the guard at the East Gate, made repairs.”
