Summary: With all the commandments that God has given us, Jesus explicitly pointed out two that were the greatest for us to follow.

THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT

Mark 12:28-31

A. Why these two commandments, over all the others.

• If we love the Lord as we should, we will not sin against Him.

o He will be our top priority and everything else will fall into place

o When our love for the Lord falters, then we will be living a life that is not in line with Christ life.

o When we are out of line with God, it is far easier to harm others.

• If we love our neighbors, as we should, neither will we offend him.

o Remember the saying: Treat others, as you would like to be treated.

o If I truly love my neighbor, I will be less likely to sin against him.

o When there is a problem between a fellow man, and us it is an indication that there are problems in our love life.

 You cannot hate or hurt, one that you love.

B. What Jesus is telling us is that we can always be assured that we will do the right thing by God and by our fellow man if we will love the Lord supremely, with everything we have and are, and if we will simply love those around us as strongly as we love ourselves.
