The Great I Am

July 13, 2014 Evening Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: Jesus is fully God and has always existed, since before the beginning.

Focus Passage: Exodus 3:13-14

Supplemental Passage: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

Introduction: “What’s your name?” “Puddin Tame. Ask me again and I’ll tell you the same.” What’s in a name? Some people have common names; names that you can find on coffee mugs. Other people have, well, more exotic names. Then there are the poor children of celebrities with names like Apple, or Camera, or Peaches Honeyblossom, or Banjo, or Sage Moonblood, or Dweezil, or Moon Unit. Names are important and it is always important to remember someone’s name, not just their face. To know someone’s name, or especially a nick-name is to be connected to them. Sometimes, as in movies, names are used for passwords, as in “Jimmy sent me.”

I. I Am – the Creator

a. Jesus IS the Creator

b. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. (John 1:1-3)

c. Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:26-27)

d. Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." (John 8:58)

II. I Am – the Sacrifice

a. Jesus IS the perfect sacrifice

b. So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, "Whom do you seek?" They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He *said to them, "I am He." And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. So when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground. Therefore He again asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene." Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way," to fulfill the word which He spoke, "Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one." (John 18:4-9)

c. And they all said, "Are You the Son of God, then?" And He said to them, "Yes, I am." (Luke 22:70)

III. I Am – the Redeemer

a. Jesus IS the Savior of the World

b. But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN." (Mark 14:61-62)

c. "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)

d. "I and the Father are one." (John 10:30)
