The Fullness of Fearing God

Purpose: To lay out the reasons for fearing God.

Aim: I want the listener to see the benefits of fearing God and strive to grow in their fear of God.

INTRODUCTION: What Bible truth will do the following things?:

- it will keep us from fear Proverbs 19-23

- it will allow us to live longerProverbs 10:27

- it will make us and our families more secure.Proverbs 14:26

- it is a source of life.Proverbs 15:16

- it brings honor.Proverbs 22:4

- should be praised. Proverbs 31:30

I. If We Should Fear God Then What Does it Look Like?

Proverbs 8:13 “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverted mouth, I hate. (NAU)

Imagine how our lives would be different if we really hated our own sin. Church members would get together to repeat all the good things that other church members are doing.

Husbands and wives would almost never fight because they would be so busy listening to the other person and asking for forgiveness.

II. What Will Motivate Us To Fear God?

A. God’s position

Job 38:12 “Have you ever in your life commanded the morning, And caused the dawn to know its place, (NAU)

Job 38:17-18 17 “Have the gates of death been revealed to you, Or have you seen the gates of deep darkness? 18 “Have you understood the expanse of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this. (NAU)

Job 38:35 “Can you send forth lightnings that they may go And say to you, ‘Here we are’? (NAU)

Job 42:6 Therefore I retract, And I repent in dust and ashes.” (NAU)

Isaiah 40:12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And marked off the heavens by the span, And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales? (NAU)

Isaiah 40:17-18 17 All the nations are as nothing before Him, They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless. 18 To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare with Him? (NAU)

B. God’ glory

Isaiah 6:1-4 1 In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. 2 Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.” 4 And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke. C. God’s punishment

Matthew 5:22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. (NAU)

Matthew 7:19 “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (NAU)

Mark 9:43-44 43 “If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, 44 [where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.] (NAU)

John 3:18 . . . he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (NAU)

Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; (NAU)

2 Corinthians 5:11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God;. . . . (NAU)

D. God’s power

The gospel of Mark talks a lot about how amazed people were at Christ.

- they were amazed at His teaching 1:22

- they were amazed at His power over demons 1:27

- they were amazed at His power to forgive sins 2:12

- they were amazed when He put demons into pigs 5:20

- they were amazed when He raised a girl from the dead 5:42

- they were amazed when He explained the Scriptures 6:2

- they were amazed at His wisdom 12:17

- they were amazed when He walked on water 6:51

- they were amazed when He healed a deaf mute 7:37

- they were amazed at the very sight of Jesus 9:15
