Summary: In celebrating Earth Day, we must remember, "The Earth is the Lord's"

The Earth is the Lord’s

Psalm 24:1-2

Intro.

______________ is Earth Day.

It is NOT a national holiday.

However, it is recognized all over the world (190

countries)

It was started in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson of

Wisconsin after he witnessed an oil spill near Santa

Barbara, California in 1969

Initially it was to be a day of education in colleges and

high schools.

It turned out to be a day of demonstrations calling for a

cleaner earth.

Some thoughts on Earth day.

I. God owns it.

Psalm 24:1-2

A. The phrase “The earth is the Lord’s” is found at least ? four times in the Bible.

a. Exodus 9:29

b. Psalm 34:1

c. Twice in 1 Corinthians 10

B. Frankly, it all belongs to him.

C. We are stewards of the earth.

1. God gave it to us for our use – food etc.

2. God gave us dominion over it.

Genesis 1:26 “And God said, Let us make man

in our image, after our likeness: and let them

have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over

the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over

all the earth, and over every creeping thing that

creepeth upon the earth.”

D. Notice, is also owns everything in it. Vs. 2

II. God made it.

Exodus 20:11 “For in six days the LORD made heaven

and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the

seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath

day, and hallowed it.”

A. I believe in a literal Creation.

1. Not a gradual creation.

2. Not a gapped creation

3. Not an allegorical creation.

4. Not just “intelligent design”

B. I believe God made it just like the Bible says.

1. God spoke. And it was.

2. He put everything in it in six days. (literal days)

III. God sustains it (keeps it going)

Hebrews 1:1-3

A. He keeps the earth in rotation.

a. Sundown and sunrise.

b. It is measurable and predictable

- Sunset 7:49 PM

- Sunrise 6:56 AM

B. He keeps the earth in balance.

C. He holds it all together.

Colossians 1:16, 17 “For by him were all things

created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth,

visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or

dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things

were created by him, and for him:And he is before

all things, and by him all things consist.”

- “Consist – Holds together.

- He’s got the whole world in his hand.

IV. God controls it.

Matthew 5:45 ..for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil

and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the

unjust.”

A. I believe God controls the weather.

B. God once made it rain for 40 days and 40 Nights.

C. God stopped time for Joshua

D. God turned the clock back for Hezekiah.

E. God is all powerful, and has power over the earth.

This is why I don’t get very excited about global warming or climate change or whatever their calling it now.

- How arrogant of man to think that man can do what

only God can do.

V. God will destroy it.

A. The first earth is passed away.

Rev. 21:1 ¶ And I saw a new heaven and a new

earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed

away; and there was no more sea.

Isaiah 65:17 “For, behold, I create new heavens and

a new earth: and the former shall not be

remembered, nor come into mind.”

1. God will create a new earth.

2. This one will be destroyed.

B. God will destroy it with a great heat.

2 Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come as a

thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall

pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall

melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works

that are therein shall be burned up.”

Hmmm…maybe I do believe in global warming.

C. When? – The day of the Lord – We Jesus returns

D. God is going to make us a new place for us.

- The new place will be called the New Jerusalem.

- The place where God dwells.

Conclusion

John 14:1-6

It is only through Jesus that you will enter the New

Jerusalem.

- You could say it is a gated community.

John 10:9 “I am the door: by me if any man

enter in, he shall be saved

- You will only get in by Jesus.

John 6:47 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth

on me hath everlasting life.”
