The Greatest Pick up Line Ever!

Wayne Rogers

Today we’re going to talk about “Pick up Lines.”

Here are a few of the worst I found…..Maybe a few have been used on you.

● Are you a parking ticket? (What?) You’ve got fine written all over you.

● Excuse me, I think you have something in your eye. Nope, it’s just a sparkle.

● Hey, I lost my phone number … Can I have yours?

● I’m not drunk, I’m just intoxicated by you.

● Are you accepting applications for your fan club?

● Remember me? Oh, that’s right, I’ve met you only in my dreams.

Pick up lines are designed to pick someone up. To catch their attention and let them know that you are interested in them.

As you can see some aren’t as effective as we would like them to be.

For most people, the pickup line can be the first step in finding that ever elusive “true love.”

As we’ve seen today, there are a lot of really bad pick up lines out there, but I’ve spoken to people who with fondness can remember the pickup line that launched their life long relationship!

Most people use pick up lines to try and make a”love connection.” And let’s face it..........We ALL want to be loved! We were made for love.

The word “love” can mean a lot of things in our culture. Webster’s dictionary has 9 different definitions of the word, everything from a warm affection to sexual attraction. But today we’re going to talk about the love God has for us.

The fact is the Bible is God’s love letter written to us. It reveals His plan on how to pick us up and bring us back to Himself.

1. God’s love for us is Unconditional.

John 8:1-11 MSG

1-2 Jesus went across to Mount Olives, but he was soon back in the Temple again. Swarms of people came to him. He sat down and taught them. 3-6 The religion scholars and Pharisees led in a woman who had been caught in an act of adultery. They stood her in plain sight of everyone and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught red-handed in the act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, gives orders to stone such persons. What do you say?” They were trying to trap him into saying something incriminating so they could bring charges against him. 6-8 Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger in the dirt. They kept at him, badgering him. He straightened up and said, “The sinless one among you, go first: Throw the stone.” Bending down again, he wrote some more in the dirt. 9-10 Hearing that, they walked away, one after another, beginning with the oldest. The woman was left alone. Jesus stood up and spoke to her. “Woman, where are they? Does no one condemn you?” 11 “No one, Master.” “Neither do I,” said Jesus. “Go on your way. From now on, don’t sin.” (or leave your life of sin)

Some facts about the story:

The “religious” leaders were simply trying to trap Jesus; they really didn’t care about the woman.

They publicly humiliated this poor woman by dragging before a crowd; they could have simply held her privately in custody while they spoke with Jesus.

Where was the man!?! The law of the day said that all parties were to be put to death. They knew both parties because she was caught in the act and brought to Jesus.

Jesus could have agreed with the law, he could have agreed she deserved to die for breaking the law, but Jesus loved her enough to have mercy. His love transcended her actions.

It doesn’t matter where you have been in the past or where you are today, it doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the past or what you are doing today, God loves you, he loves me unconditionally!

To be honest, I have no idea why he loves us the way he does, but I’m glad he does!

2. God’s love is Unchanging.

Romans 8:37-39 MSG

None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.

God knew us before we were born, all that was going to be, the good, the bad and the ugly, and He still loved us.

Psalms 139:13-16 MSG

Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb.

I thank you, High God - you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration - what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.
