The Anointing

What is the Anointing?

Anointing/anointed/anoints

Chrisma or chriô Don’t mix it with charisma

Chriô means to rub lightly or spread over something cover

Anointing was an ancient custom used by Egyptians, Greeks and Romans

It was an act of hospitality towards a guest; you are invited as an honoured guest into the house of Jehovah

The anointing gave the right to rule

For John the chrisma is the Spirit of truth who gives believers the power of understanding

Where do we find it in the Bible?

Anointing was introduced by God to Moses to make holy things belonging to the tabernacle Many recorded passages throughout Exodus. Deut and Lev.

In the OT the term anointing is used in at least 5 ways:

1. oil Ex 30:25 sacred anointing oil; said to be on holy things

2. the consecration of the priests Lev 8:10-13

3. the consecration of Kings 1 Sam 10:1

4. connected to the H/S 1 Sam10:6

5. the prophets were said to anointed Ps 105:15

To anoint signified the gift of authority, strength and honour Ps 45:7-8

You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes [and] cassia, Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad.

It was only available to Kings and Priests or a testimony of a prophet

Examples: Aaron, David and Elijah

Is 10:27 It shall come to pass in that day [That] his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, And his yoke from your neck, And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

Israel to be delivered from the power of the Assyrians

But also looking further to the deliverance of people from the bondage of sin and Satan

Not only will the yoke be taken, but destroyed

The enemies terror is broken and destroyed; done away with

The enemy seemed to be advancing and moving forward with daring pace

Those who threaten the Lord’s people front up to God

Ps 105:14-15 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes;

[Saying], Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

God’s anointed prophets are dearer to him than anointed kings themselves. Jeroboam’s hand was withered when it was stretched out against a prophet

N T Jesus was anointed by God Luke 4:18

"The Spirit of the LORD [is] upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to [the] poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to [the] captives And recovery of sight to [the] blind, [To] set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him” (Acts 10:38)

The religious world recognized the Spirit in Jesus and because he had the Holy Spirit, yet they crucified him

He wasn’t religious; he lived in a relationship with the Father

It didn’t stop with Jesus

The NT is full of examples of how the H/S moved on believers

Why is it important for today?

It shows us that we have new life

It empowers us for service

He gives us abilities beyond our flesh

Having the Holy Spirit helps us to discern the spirits 1Jn 4:1-6

By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

How do I know when I have it?

The world cannot receive the Spirit

They might want to join a church, but it is more than this

No man can come unless the Father draws him

They need regeneration to be twice born

You know what family you belong to

You cannot be a Christian without the H/S

An illumination from heaven; no one has taught you who I am…

He wants us to have the anointing

Do you feel comfortable in your spiritual skin?

When you accept the anointing God has given you, then you will stop looking over your shoulder at others

Saul lost the anointing

The decent of the Spirit at Pentecost was not the beginning

90% of the work of the church would still continue if the Spirit left

Many are turning out what looks like the move of God, but there’s no anointing; no touch of God

People like Jackie Pullinger, Corrie Ten-Boon, Rieanhard Bonki move naturally in the anointing

R T Kendall said, ‘To the spiritual person the supernatural seems natural’

The anointing upon your gift causes it to function easily

We don’t have to ‘work it up’

It will come easy to you

Have you come to terms with your limitations and strengths?
