THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS

By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr. Kyfingers@aol.com

Text:

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Today we are hearing about the SEVEN DEADLY SINS.

I thought it might be a good STUDY to look at the 7 DEADLY SINS IN THE BIBLE.

Sin is any want of conformity unto transgression of God's law....

Omission

Commission

Inward

Outward

All sins are birthed out of one of these SEVEN DEADLY SINS...

1. ENVY, DISCONTENT, COVET is the first of the deadly sins...

THIS IS A MARK OF COLD HEARTEDNESS

A GREAT DESIRE FOR OTHERS POSSESSIONS, a strong desire for worldly possessions

Discontent aroused by another's better fortune,

OBJECT OF FEELING, BITTER, JEALOUSY, RESENTMENT, BEGRUDGE

Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's

wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy

neighbour's.

Luke 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not

in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

James 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

ENVY: JOSEPH'S BROTHERS...

Col. 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate

affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Ephes. 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater,

hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

1 Tim. 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts,

which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Matthew 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and

where thieves do not break through nor steal:

2. GLUTTONONY, EXCESSIVENESS... is the second of the seven deadly sins...

Excessive desire for food and pleasing appetite, habitual greed

EATING WHEN PASS FULL... OVEREATER... ADDICTED

Deut. 21:20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will

not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

Proverbs 23:21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man

with rags.

Philip. 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

3. LUST, UNCONTROLED DESIRE... is the third of the seven deadly sins...

sinful longing,

Strong desires, passionate desires, strong drives, crave

Lust leads to the falling away from GOD.

James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

[15] Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth

forth death.

Mark 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things

entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

Romans 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful;

but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law:

for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed

adultery with her already in his heart.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

[17] For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the

one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

4. The fourth of the seven deadly sins are: PRIDE, HIGH SELF-OPINION

Elevated self opinion, elevated satisfaction in achievements or possessions

High or overbearing opinion of one's self worth or importance.

Brag, boast,

Conceited, vanity

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy,

pride, foolishness:

1 Tim. 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride

of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

5. SLOTH, SLOTHFULNESS, LAZINESS is the fifth in the seven deadly sins.

Lazy, idleness, slow moving, apathy

Not working, unoccupied, no plan or purpose,

Romans 12:11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
