Summary: Sleep is a big deal in the Bible!

The Psalms – The Language of Our Faith

Psalm 91 – Terror Free Sleep

April 15, 2018

Sleep is a big deal in the Bible!!

Genesis 2 – Adam was put to sleep by God and it cost him a rib

Judges 16 – Samson fell asleep and it cost him his hair ??

1 Samuel 26 – Saul fell asleep and it cost him his camping gear ??

Psalm 3:35 NIV

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.”

Psalm 4:8 NIV

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 91:1-6 NIV

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.

Notice that Psalm 91 mentions every hour of the day! God is watching over us 24 hours a day!

V.5 – You will not fear the terror of night

Sleep is one of the most important things we can do for our health and wellbeing.

Insufficient sleep for just one night can be as detrimental to your driving ability as having an alcoholic drink.

A good night’s sleep:

1. Helps improve your memory

2. Helps fight depression

3. Helps you live longer

4. Helps you be more creative

5. Helps you lose weight ??

Sleep is possible, even in storms

Luke 8:22-25 NIV

“One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So, they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown! “He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples.”

Acts 12:5-7 NIV

“So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. 6 The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists.

The angel appeared, a light shone and still Peter did not wake up! That was some deep sleep!

Good sleep is not dependent on all being well in our lives.

Good sleep depends on all being well with God!

For most of us, we believe that God loves us.

We find it harder to believe that He’s acting on our behalf.

Faith is believing that God has taken responsibility for us.

The Table:

Psalm 91:1-2 NIV

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
