Explores the depth of commitment to Christ, emphasizing self-denial, divine direction, and determined discipleship as paths to true life.

Introduction

Beloved congregation, I stand before you today, warmed by the familiar faces of my brothers and sisters in Christ, and I am filled with a profound sense of joy and anticipation. We are gathered here, united in faith, bound by love, and driven by a shared desire to draw closer to our Heavenly Father. It is in this spirit of unity and shared purpose that I invite you to ponder with me the profound message of Matthew 16:24-26, a passage that calls us to consider the essence of our devotion, the direction of our divine calling, and the determination required in discipleship.

Denying Desires for Devotion

The great Charles Spurgeon once said, "Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference between right and almost right." This profound wisdom from a man of deep faith and understanding serves as a reminder that our walk with Christ is not simply about choosing good over evil, but about striving for the highest good, the perfect will of God. As we open our hearts to the words of Matthew, let us seek not just what is right, but what is divinely right.

Denying Desires for Devotion

In the heart of Matthew's gospel, we find a profound call to self-denial. This is not a call to deny our needs or our humanity, but a call to deny the desires that pull us away from God. It is a call to put God first, above all else. This is a challenging call, but it is also a call filled with promise and hope. For in denying our desires, we open ourselves up to a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with God.

The recognition of our desires: We all have desires. We desire comfort, security, success, recognition, and a host of other things. These desires are not inherently bad. In fact, many of them are good and natural. But when these desires become our primary focus, when they take precedence over our devotion to God, they become a problem. They become idols that draw us away from God. Recognizing our desires is the first step in denying them. We need to take a hard look at our lives and ask ourselves what we truly desire. What are the things that we are pursuing with all our energy and passion? Are these things drawing us closer to God or pulling us away from Him? Are they enhancing our relationship with Him or hindering it?

The decision to put God first: This is not a one-time decision, but a daily, even moment-by-moment, decision. It is a decision to seek God's will above our own, to seek His glory above our own, to seek His kingdom above our own. This decision requires courage and determination, but it also brings peace and joy. For in putting God first, we align ourselves with His perfect will and purpose for our lives.

The action of denying our desires: This is where the rubber meets the road. It is one thing to recognize our desires and decide to put God first, but it is another thing entirely to actually deny our desires. This requires discipline and perseverance. It requires us to say no to the things that pull us away from God and yes to the things that draw us closer to Him. It requires us to make sacrifices, to give up things that we hold dear for the sake of our relationship with God.

The transformation that comes from denying our desires: As we deny our desires and put God first, we are transformed. We become more like Christ, who denied Himself and took up His cross for our sake. We become more loving, more compassionate, more patient, more kind. We become more focused on serving others and less focused on serving ourselves. We become more in tune with God's heart and less in tune with the world's values.
