Summary: Dr. Wood used this sermon to show his listener that the first church was totally consumed with God and they did great things in His power. Unbelievers cannot understand the happenings of Christianity until they give their heart and life to Jesus Christ.

A contrast of Wine and the spirit

Alcohol gives artificial exhilaration

The Spirit Gives Holy elevation

Alcohol excites evil

The spirit points men toward good

Alcohol will give you a hangover

The spirit will give you power over

Alcohol will cause a man to act foolishly

The spirit will incite wisdom in a man

Alcohol has a temporary effect

The spirits effect will last for eternity

Look at some effects of spiritual intoxication

Remember – all present received the Holy Spirit here – not just the crowd

1. Spiritual Intoxication will cause you to begin understanding scripture

a. Peter here began to reach back into the Old testament

i. The Book of Joel (Joel 2:28-32)

ii. Peter understood this scripture like never before.

iii. Make note of 1 Corinthians 2:12-14

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

2. Spiritual intoxication will cause you to be concerned for others

a. Verse 22 “Men of Israel Hear these words”

i. The speaking in tongues clearly shows us that God is concerned for all people

1. The nations present to hear these words

a. All Races

b. All Languages

c. All People

ii. The care for others will cause Act:1:8 to ring in our hears

1. Go to all nations

a. Matt 28:19-20 Is not done for ones self but for others

i. Teach

ii. Preach

iii. Baptize

iv. Making them Disciples Of Jesus and not of any man

iii. At Pentecost The Holy spirit was released Throughout the world

1. This was a new thought for the Jews

2. Pentecost – Feast of Weeks

3. Formerly called Feast of Ingathering

a. This became the feast to gather all nations unto God and His kingdom

3. Spiritual Intoxication will cause you to have a renewed mind

a. These people that mocked and said that they were drunk must have been there

i. Their minds instantly went to the negative

b. Ephesians 4:22-23

But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

c. Your flesh and your Spirit will begin to work together

i. There will become a change

ii. The key is the Spirit takes over the actions of the flesh

The Holy Spirit will kindle enthusiasm – He will never bypass our humanity or our personality

iii. Paul shows us in 1 Corinthians 3:1-2

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able;

1. He speaks of growing in the spirit and less of the flesh

4. Spiritual Intoxication will cause you to speak boldly about Jesus Christ

a. Note Peter Pointed out Who was responsible for the death of Jesus

i. He spoke to the same people who 50 days earlier were yelling “Crucify Him”

b. The Apostle Paul was so Guided by the spirit He said in Philippians 1:20-21 while in prison

according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

c. Look at Peters Text and sermon

i. From the book of Joel 2:28-32

1. This text is called the Law of Double reference

a. A portion of this text was taking place now and some to come

i. Ex. V 20-21

ii. The last days refer to the last days of Israel and not of the church

ii. Peter shows the complete circle of Jesus Christ Verses 22-24

iii. Peter refers back to scripture Psalm 16:8-11

5. Spiritual intoxication will unleash freedom of speech verse 29

a. Peter was speaking to the Jewish listeners he quoted what the Jews knew

i. The Old testament

ii. The Old testament made a clear case for Jesus and all that Peter had witnessed

b. Peter states that David could not be speaking of himself because David’s body was in a tomb.
