Series: Biblical Cities- Sodom [#1]

SODOM- THE HOME OF LOT

Genesis 10:19

Introduction:

We are continuing in our Series about some of the most mentioned Cities in the Bible. Tonight, we are going to begin to study the city that is 4th on the list- Sodom. Sodom is mentioned 48 times in the Bible. Unlike our study of Nazareth and Bethlehem, there is not anything kind said of Sodom.

Genesis 10:19

The 1st time we hear about Sodom is when Lot is searching for his new home. Lot gives us examples of seeing things in a worldly way.

Genesis 13:5-9

It was time for Abram and Lot to go their separate ways. Abram gave Lot the 1st pick.

Genesis 13:10-12

The human eye…

1. Looks for material value.

Lot saw that the land was well watered. He knew that was 1 of the key things to great farming and ranching. He was counting the money and wealth that he was going to have. He pitched his tent near Sodom.

It is important to notice that he was near Sodom. We know about the evil things that were going on in Sodom; and I believe that Lot did also. Since Lot lived outside of Sodom, he didn’t consider himself to be a part of the problem. This shows us that it matters who we link our lives to. If you ignore sin around you, it will begin to affect you.

Genesis 13:13

The human eye…

2. Does not look for spiritual value.

This verse is clear- The people of Sodom were evil and sinned greatly. Notice, that they sinned against God. Every sin is against God.

Conclusion:

Lots new home, Sodom was a place of evil. Lot was looking at things through human eyes, while Abram looked at things through spiritual eyes. Which eyes are you looking through?
