Summary: Today we tend to forget choices have consequences? How are the mighty fallen? Perhaps we must realize the price of missing can be greater than we want to pay? What are we looking to receive?

SO WHAT? STAYING HOME?

By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr. Kyfingers@aol.com

Years ago my little son loved the GENERAL LEE, the car from the Duke Boys TV show. Linda was gone to church and Wade, my son was playing and he wanted his General Lee. So he yelled and said: Dad, where is the General. I said: Right over there. He said: WHERE? Right over there. He could not see the car. I looked over at my son. He had both eyes closed and had his hands out trying to feel around and find the General Lee. I laughed.

Of course you cannot see with your eyes closed. He had to open his eyes to see.

TODAY WE UNDERSTAND THIS SAD TRUTH. People are so narrow minded they seem to focus on today. Many refuse to open their eyes to the consequences of their choices.

WHAT CAN THE CONSEQUENCES OF ONE DAY DO?

David was King. David learned to delegate authority. Joab was a great leader and very capable of handling the battle and allow David to stay at home for R&R, Rest and Relaxation. IT WAS TIME: WHAT TIME? IT WAS TIME WHEN KINGS GO FORTH INTO BATTLE.

SO WHAT? David has been faithful. His men loved and appreciated their King. So why isn’t it OK to stay home…?

2 Samuel 11:1 And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

So what? David had always been faithful to lead his army to battle! So what is staying home going to hurt? IT APPEARS DAVID HAD GROWN LAZY AND TIRED. DAVID’S ATTITUDES HAD CHANGED. DAVID BECOMES SOFT IN HIS DUTIES AS KING. David loved the easy life of the PALACE and he was spoiled to THE GOOD THINGS he had earned?

DAVID HAS FALLEN FROM HIS DREAM. HE USED TO PRAY AND RELY ON GOD? NOT ONLY HAD DAVID’S EGO GROWN, HE WAS NOT DEPENDING ON GOD… HE BECAME SELF RELIANT. David had a massive, the best war machine of his day. He feel like he didn’t need God’s plan, WARRIOR DAVID knew how to battle?

David had lived a rough, hard life. He was a shepherd boy out in the fields with his Dad’s flock. That was difficult. He faced a bear and later a lion. David spent much of his first years running from the enemies and then he had to run from his friends and allies. The PALACE was so comfortable and easy.

He laid around in his bed. No doubt he ate rich food and GOT FAT. At least SPIRITUALLY FAT.

HOW DOES A MIGHTY WARRIOR SLOWLY, GRADUALLY SLIP FROM GOD’S MAN TO MORAL FAILURE. WE NEED TO STUDY AND LOOK AT: HOW ARE THE MIGHTY FALLEN?

1 Samuel 13:14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

DAVID ASKS THE SAME QUESTION THREE TIMES IN ONE CHAPTER… HOW? WHY?

2 Samuel 1:19 The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!

2 Samuel 1:25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

2 Samuel 1:27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

WARNING! WARNING! DAVID’S FALL FROM MIGHTY KING TO A MORAL FAILURE MUST BE CONSIDERED… BECAUSE DAVID WAS NOT WHERE HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN, HE OPENED THE DOOR TO A DARK TIME.

2 Samuel 11:2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

GOD REVEALS THE SECRETS… THE PREACHER STUDIES FOR HIS SERMON: THOU ART THE MAN… DAVID TURNED FROM A MAN AFTER GOD’S HEART TO DESPISE THE WORD AND COMMANDMENTS OF GOD… DAVID KNEW BETTER! THE PAY DAY WILL BE VERY COSTLY.

2 Samuel 12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 8 And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. 9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. 11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.
