Simple Promises for Life’s Storms

John 6:15-21 Monte T. Brown

Introduction:

I would like to share with you this evening the simple promises for life’s storms.

1. We are governed by His Providence

2. We have the potential to grow by his Plans

3. We are sustained by His Prayers and Presence

4. We can overcome by his Power and Purpose

As we look at each one of these simple promises may we see that God is in control of the storms of life.

Scripture

15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

16 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.

18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.

19 So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.

20 But He said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."

21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

Prayer

1. We are governed by his Providence

22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. Matthew 14:22

16 Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. John 6:16-17

There are some advantages that a Christian has over those that have not experienced the gift of Eternal Life.

A. Our storms are never incidental

B. Our storms never surprise our Lord

C. Our storms never overcome us

When we are under grace of Jesus Christ it is divine intervention.

2. We have the potential to grow by His Plans.

1 … You have relieved me in my distress; … Psalms 41

18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. John 6:18

As a Christian when we are being lead by the Holy Spirit, because we are walking with Christ.

A. Our storms will grow our faith

B. Our storms will grow our fellowship

C. Different storms will grow us

1. Correcting storms – Jonah

2. Perfecting storms – the disciples

3. We are sustained by His Prayers and Presence

A. Jesus is an interceding Savior

25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:25

B. Jesus is an all-seeing Savior

48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by. Mark 6:48

C. Jesus is an ever-present Savior

25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. Matthew 14:25

4. We can overcome by His Power and Purpose

20 But He said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid." 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going. John 6:20-21

33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33

“The will of God will never take you where the grace of God cannot keep you.” – Anonymous

A. He declares His power in identifying Himself

“It is I…” John 6:20a

B. His identity provides abundance

… But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33b

C. His purpose and will are always safest

“God is willing to assume the responsibility of a life totally yielded to Him.” – Andrew Murray

Conclusion/Invitation:

As we conclude the message this evening I hope that we have embraced the simple promise for life’s storms.

1. We are governed by His Providence

2. We have the potential to grow by his Plans

3. We are sustained by His Prayers and Presence

4. We can overcome by his Power and Purpose

Understanding that God is in control and that His providence and His plans for our lives are cultivated through prayer and His presence and we can be more that conquers by His power and purpose.
