Need:
To recognize & prioritize those matters that are of great significance to Jesus.
We began our look at—Jesus’ 7 Words From the Cross, with:
1. “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
—Lk. 23:34.
*Godly Forgiveness*
2. “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
—Luke 23:43(:32, 39-43).
*Eternal Salvation. Vital decision. Today. Now. Immediately.*
3. “Woman, behold your son!” & “Behold your mother!”
—Jn. 19:26-27.
*Commitment to parent’s welfare. Godly care for parents. Love.*
4. “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
—Mat. 27:46(45-46); Mk. 15:34(33-34)
*God’s Judgment was upon the Son, as man’s Sacrificial Substitute.*
TODAY we’ll continue with Jesus’ fifth ‘word From The CROSS...
5—“I thirst”—Jn. 19:28(28-29)
Explanation:(Jn. 19:28(28-29))
Jn. 19:28—“After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
*Thru the Cross, God’s purposes for mankind in particular & creation in general(Rom. 8:19-22) would be completed!
• “Jesus” voluntarily went to & was hanging on the Cross, fully “knowing”, that everything regarding His ministry on earth—from birth to His now impending death—was at the point of being “accomplished”(:30).
•Jesus, fully “knew that all things” regarding the purposes of His ministry, were at the pin-point of being concluded.
•And in order to seal & appropriately signify that accomplishment, Jesus “fulfills” “the Scripture” by openly & publicly quoting from it.
*But in order for all that to come to their intended end, “Jesus” first needed to quench His “thirst”(Ps. 22:15; Ps. 69:21).
Ps. 22:15—“My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.”
*So WHY did He need to quench His “thirst”?
•Prior to fulfilling His final & grandest act of Divine intervention for mankind....
•Jesus needed to make known to others publicly, “that all things were now accomplished” thru His crucifixion. So He let the onlookers know He was “thirsty.”
•And so, His last words from the Cross would be of great significance!
“Accomplished”(See :30-“finished”)—telew—Perfect Passive Indicative 3rd Sing.—To bring to a close, to finish, to end; To perform, execute, complete, fulfill; To Complete, execute, conclude, discharge.
Jn. 19:29—“Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; & they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, & put it to His mouth.”
Mk. 15:36—“Then someone ran & filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, & offered it to Him to drink,...”
“Sour wine” was is NOT the ‘distilled vinegar’ that we are most familiar with....
•“Sour wine” was a ‘vinegar’ produced from wine. Today, you can buy it in the grocery store as ‘red wine vinegar.’
Ps. 69:21—“They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”[cf. Jn. 19:29]
The branch of the “hyssop” plant or “reed”(Mk. 15:36) was ‘probably’ ~18 inches long. Enough length to get the sponge to Jesus’ lips.
•The “hyssop” would have been a reminder to any knowledgable Jew, of the “hyssop” regularly used in the Jewish sacrificial system. “Hyssop” was used in the Tabernacle & Temple for the sprinkling of a ‘sacrificed animal’s blood’ in order to ceremonially sanctify certain objects.
•The “hyssop” would no doubt, also have reminded them, of the saving blood of the original Passover lamb’s sacrifice, which freed them from the final plague in Egypt, of the death of all the firstborn in the land...
Ex. 12:22-23—“And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, & strike the lintel & the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning. For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians; & when He sees the blood on the lintel & on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door & not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you.”
