Need:

To recognize & prioritize those matters that are of great significance to Jesus.

We began our look at—Jesus’ 7 Words From the Cross, with:

1. “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

—Lk. 23:34.

*Godly Forgiveness*

2. “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

—Luke 23:43(:32, 39-43).

*Eternal Salvation. Vital decision. Today. Now. Immediately.*

3. “Woman, behold your son!” & “Behold your mother!”

—Jn. 19:26-27.

*Commitment to parent’s welfare. Godly care for parents. Love.*

4. “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

—Mat. 27:46(45-46); Mk. 15:34(33-34)

*God’s Judgment was upon the Son, as man’s Sacrificial Substitute.*

TODAY we’ll continue with Jesus’ fifth ‘word From The CROSS...

5—“I thirst”—Jn. 19:28(28-29)

Explanation:(Jn. 19:28(28-29))

Jn. 19:28—“After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”

*Thru the Cross, God’s purposes for mankind in particular & creation in general(Rom. 8:19-22) would be completed!

• “Jesus” voluntarily went to & was hanging on the Cross, fully “knowing”, that everything regarding His ministry on earth—from birth to His now impending death—was at the point of being “accomplished”(:30).

•Jesus, fully “knew that all things” regarding the purposes of His ministry, were at the pin-point of being concluded.

•And in order to seal & appropriately signify that accomplishment, Jesus “fulfills” “the Scripture” by openly & publicly quoting from it.

*But in order for all that to come to their intended end, “Jesus” first needed to quench His “thirst”(Ps. 22:15; Ps. 69:21).

Ps. 22:15—“My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.”

*So WHY did He need to quench His “thirst”?

•Prior to fulfilling His final & grandest act of Divine intervention for mankind....

•Jesus needed to make known to others publicly, “that all things were now accomplished” thru His crucifixion. So He let the onlookers know He was “thirsty.”

•And so, His last words from the Cross would be of great significance!

“Accomplished”(See :30-“finished”)—telew—Perfect Passive Indicative 3rd Sing.—To bring to a close, to finish, to end; To perform, execute, complete, fulfill; To Complete, execute, conclude, discharge.

Jn. 19:29—“Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; & they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, & put it to His mouth.”

Mk. 15:36—“Then someone ran & filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, & offered it to Him to drink,...”

“Sour wine” was is NOT the ‘distilled vinegar’ that we are most familiar with....

•“Sour wine” was a ‘vinegar’ produced from wine. Today, you can buy it in the grocery store as ‘red wine vinegar.’

Ps. 69:21—“They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”[cf. Jn. 19:29]

The branch of the “hyssop” plant or “reed”(Mk. 15:36) was ‘probably’ ~18 inches long. Enough length to get the sponge to Jesus’ lips.

•The “hyssop” would have been a reminder to any knowledgable Jew, of the “hyssop” regularly used in the Jewish sacrificial system. “Hyssop” was used in the Tabernacle & Temple for the sprinkling of a ‘sacrificed animal’s blood’ in order to ceremonially sanctify certain objects.

•The “hyssop” would no doubt, also have reminded them, of the saving blood of the original Passover lamb’s sacrifice, which freed them from the final plague in Egypt, of the death of all the firstborn in the land...

Ex. 12:22-23—“And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, & strike the lintel & the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning. For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians; & when He sees the blood on the lintel & on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door & not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you.”

(CONT...)5—“I thirst”—Jn. 19:28(28-29)

Jn. 19:29.>.>.>.>.>.>.> (CONT...)5—“I thirst”—Jn. 19:28(28-29)

The “sponge” was soaked in the “sour wine”/“vinegar”, which was then attached to the “hyssop” or “reed.” It was then “put” or pressed up “to” Jesus’ lips...

•So Jesus would have been able to suck the vinegar from the “sponge” & moisten his mouth.

Again, this was all in fulfillment of the Scripture(:28--Ps. 69:21 & Ps. 22:15)...& most if not all messianic prophecies.

Argumentation:

Ps. 63:1—<<A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah.>> “O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry & thirsty land Where there is no water.”

Ps. 42:1-2—<<To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah.>> “As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come & appear before God?”

Ps. 84:2—of the sons of Korah—“My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the LORD; My heart & my flesh cry out for the living God.”

Ps. 143:6—A Psalm of David—“I spread out my hands to You; My soul longs for You like a thirsty land. Selah.”

Application:

“I thirst”—Jn. 19:28

*Prepared to declare revelation from God*

?Do YOU “thirst” for the LORD?

6—“...It is finished!...”—Jn. 19:30a

Explanation:(Jn. 19:30a)

Jn. 19:30a—“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”

1Pet. 3:18— “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,...”

Jn. 12:24—“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground & dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.”

?What does “it” refer to?:

“It” is:

*Every aspect of the entire reason for Jesus’ coming to this earth...the reason for God’s ‘visitation’ had been completed, accomplished, or “finished” thru Jesus’ life & sacrifice!

•And so, every aspect of Jesus mission on earth was accomplished or “finished” in & thru Jesus’ death by crucifixion.

•“Finished”(See :28-“accomplished”)—[tetelestai]—telew—Perfect Passive Indicative 3rd Sing.—1) To bring to a close, to finish, to end; 2) To perform, execute, complete, fulfill, (so that the thing done corresponds to what has been said, the order, command etc.)—2a) With special reference to the subject matter, to carry out the contents of a command, 2b) With reference also to the form, to do just as commanded, & generally involving the notion of time, to perform the last act which completes a process, to accomplish, fulfill. Strong—To end, i.e. Complete, execute, conclude, discharge(a debt).

•On the Cross, SIN was properly dealt with, according to God’s will, Once, For all, For all time, Decisively & Permanently!

•Jn. 4:34—“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, & to finish[teleiow] His work.”

•“Finish”—teleiow—1Aorist Active Subjunctive 1st Sing.—1) To make perfect, complete; 2) To complete(perfect); 3) To bring to the end(goal) proposed; 4) To accomplish. Strong—To complete, i.e. literally--Accomplish, or figuratively--Consummate(in character).

Rom. 6:6, 11-14, 15-16, 18, 23—“...our old man was crucified with Him[Jesus], that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.”....“Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, & your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” 15 “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”....“And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”....“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

*When Jesus said, “It is finished”, Jesus called attention to the fact that He has:

Faithfully—Taken on human flesh.

Faithfully—Humbled Himself.

Faithfully—Remained sinless.

Faithfully—Given God the glory.

Faithfully—Revealed His Father’s will.

Faithfully—Surrendered to God’s solution for sin.

Faithfully—Overcome the devil.

Faithfully—Saved the elect.

Faithfully—Secured the Christian’s future.

Faithfully—Gifted the faithful.

Faithfully—Empowered the called.

Faithfully—Enabled the weak.

Faithfully—Encouraged the faint of heart, etc.

Argumentation:

Rom. 10:4—“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”

*Col. 2:13-15—“And you, being dead in your trespasses & the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities & powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”

*2Tim. 3:16-17—“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, & is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

*2Cor. 9:8—“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.”

Eph. 2:10—“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

2Tim. 2:19-21—“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” &, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold & silver, but also of wood & clay, some for honor & some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified & useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.”

**Eph 3:14-21—“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven & earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted & grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width & length & depth & height-- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever & ever. Amen.”

**Eph. 4:11-16—“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, & some pastors & teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith & of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to & fro & carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ-- from whom the whole body, joined & knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”

?Are you complete in your service to God by faith in Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit?

Something I won’t ever have to repeat or do again...

...FINISHED tasks!--Things you can leave behind, & have peace about:

GRADUATION(High school/College). The diploma(‘sheepskin’) is an official tangible testimony to your ‘completing’ or ‘accomplishing’ the required task. FINISHED!

MARRIAGE. Loving & being loved(for better or worse)--No more looking elsewhere for love. Being satisfied--No more need to focus on ‘attraction.’ Being fulfilled--No vying for acceptance. FINISHED!

LIFE in general is to be lived in such a manner that it is entered into with a daily sense of peace with God. Daily deep satisfaction of knowing God will never renege on His promise to you thru Christ.. FINISHED!

On the other hand, we also go from one seemingly ‘completed’ task to the next!

Lay the foundation of your house—finished, UNTIL... a sinkhole opens; The plumbing leaks; Soil settles; Roof leaks; etc.—finished, UNTIL...

Change the diaper—finished, UNTIL...

Bake the cake—finished, UNTIL...

Change the oil—finished, UNTIL...

Paint the walls—finished, UNTIL...

Wash the car—finished, UNTIL...

Mow the grass—finished, UNTIL...

Cook the meal—finished, UNTIL...

Etcetera, etcetera & on & on it goes!

Application:

“...It is finished!...”—Jn. 19:30a

*Mankind’s sin debt is fully paid!*

*Thru the Cross of Christ, All was & remains complete, for the ‘potential’ salvation of mankind*

?Are YOU Assured of Accomplishments in Christ?

?Have you honored the Lord in your walk?

?Do you continue to honor His sacrifice?

?You fearful of the authority of Jesus’ words?....

OR, ?Are you comforted & consoled by them?

7—“Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.”—Lk. 23:46; Mat. 27:50; Mk. 15:37; Jn. 19:30b

Explanation/Illustration:(Lk. 23:46; Mat. 27:50; Mk. 15:37; Jn. 19:30b)

*Lk. 23:46—“And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’” Having said this, He breathed His last.”

Mat. 27:50—“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, & yielded up His spirit.”

Mk. 15:37—“And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, & breathed His last.”

Jn. 19:30—“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”

*Lk. 23:46—“And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’” Having said this, He breathed His last.”

That is a quote from Ps. 31:5(Ps. 31:1-24)! It is another Psalm of trust in God(like Ps. 69) by the prophet—King David. The statement is the realization of David’s gladness & glory, as well as, Messiah’s imminent gladness & glory.

Ps. 31:4-5—“Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, For You are my strength. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.”

*Jesus implicitly, unwaveringly, & unhesitatingly trusted His human spirit to God. Jesus was NOT afraid of surrendering His spirit to His heavenly Father!

“Commit/Commend”—paratiyhmi—Future Middle-Deponent Indicative 1st Sing.—1) To place beside or near or set before; 2) To place down (from one's self or for one's self) with any one. Strong—To place alongside, i.e. Present(food, truth); by implication--To deposit(as a trust or for protection).

“Spirit”—pneuma—Noun Neuter - 1Aorist Active Indicative 3rd Sing.—1) The third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father & the Son; 2) The spirit, i.e. The vital principal by which the body is animated—2a) The rational spirit, the power by which the human being feels, thinks, decides, 2b) The soul; 3) A spirit, i.e. A simple essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, & possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding, & acting—3a) A life giving spirit, 3b) A human soul that has left the body.... Strong—A current of air, i.e. Breath(blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively--A spirit, i.e. (human)--The rational soul,....?Pneuma—The rational & immortal soul.

Argumentation:

Jn. 17:6-18—“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, & they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; & they have received them, & have known surely that I came forth from You; & they have believed that You sent Me. “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. And all Mine are Yours, & Yours are Mine, & I am glorified in them. Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, & I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; & none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to You, & these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them Your word; & the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.”

!!All God’s people are missionary!!—

?How does that fact prepare YOU for YOUR God-ordered mission?

*1Jn. 4:17-19—“Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.”

*Mat. 10:22—“And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”

*2Cor. 4:5-14—“For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, & ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God & not of us. We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed-- always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So then death is working in us, but life in you. And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed & therefore I spoke,” we also believe & therefore speak, knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, & will present us with you.”

Col. 1:24-28—“I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, & fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden from ages & from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we preach, warning every man & teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.”

1Cor. 1:4-8—“I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance & all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Application:

“Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.”

—Lk. 23:46; Mat. 27:50; Mk. 15:37; Jn. 19:30b—

*Trust God to lovingly intentionally fulfill His plan thru YOU, no matter what it may involve*

*?Do YOU implicitly, unwaveringly, & unhesitatingly trust YOUR human spirit, YOUR life, to God.

?Are YOU unafraid of surrendering YOUR spirit to Almighty God, YOUR heavenly Father!

?Are YOU fearful of death?

?Are YOU fearful of standing before the Great ‘I Am’?

?Are YOU fearful of standing before the heavenly Father of our lord Jesus Christ?

?WHY? or ?WHY NOT?
