Summary: Just one word that means so much!

John l9:30-So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Was He saying that all the prophecies about Him had been fulfilled? No because there were more.

Psalm 31:5-Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.

Zechariah 12:10-“And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.

Psalm 34:20-He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken.

Isaiah 53:9-And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

So what is He talking about?

It Is Finished-is not the despairing cry of a helpless man

It was not expression of satisfaction to the end of His sufferings on this old earth.

No, it is the declaration of our Redeemer that all for which He came from heaven to earth to do, was now done; that all that was needed to reveal the full character of God had now been accomplished; that all that was required by law before sinners could be saved had now been performed: that the full price of our redemption was now paid.

You don’t have to worry if you have been good enough to go to heaven, if you accepted what Jesus died on the cross for your sins…..It Is Finished!

You don’t have to worry if you have done enough good things to out weigh the bad things in your life, if you have accepted in your Jesus as your Savior….It Is Finished!

IT IS FINISHED — IT IS ACCOMPLISHED — IT IS COMPLETED — THE

WORK IS DONE !

IT WAS NOT A CRY OF DEFEAT - IT WAS A SHOUT OF VICTORY !

He didn’t say, “I’m Finished!” He said, “It Is Finished!”

In the Greek, One Word….Finished

People in the first century would understand the word because it was used in

many ways:

l. TO THE SERVANT -· When the job was completed, the Servant would

say to the master — - meaning I have completed the job you gave me to do. I

did it.

2. TO THE PRIEST — The Jewish people would bring their sacrifice to be

offered — after the high priest examined and excepted it — He would say —it is

finished. . . meaning It is perfect, It is excepted!

No need longer for the flames to consume the flesh of the sacrifice; causing

the smoke to ascend up to the throne of the Most High.

No need any longer for the faithful Jews to sacrifice the lamb.

For all the sacrifices, all these rites pointed to, and were types of this one

great sacrifice of Christ!

Jesus Paid it All! All To Him I Owe! Sin Had Left A Crimson Stain; He Washed It White As Snow.

Things that were predicted about Jesus

Genesis 3:15-And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

Isaiah 7:14-Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

Genesis 22:18-In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (seed of Abraham)

2 Samuel 7;12-13-“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. (lineal descendant of David)

Micah 5:2-But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”
