Isaiah the prophet communicated the prophecy about Immanuel to Ahaz. An angel communicated the promise of Jesus to Joseph. Ahaz responded in fear. Joseph responded in trust.

King Ahaz and Judah were in serious trouble. Isaiah is sent to confirm God’s covenant with Judah with the message to “stand firm.” [7:4] God offered King Ahaz a sign which included four impossible things.

Like Ahaz before us, we don’t want a sign from God--at least a sign that leaves God running the show. What Ahaz did on the outside, we do on the inside. We like things just the way they are, if it leaves us in charge.
