SELFISHNESS AND SELF-CENTEREDNESS

By Rev. Samuel Arimoro

INTRODUCTION:

Selfishness and self-centeredness are subtle but dangerous traits that hinder spiritual growth and destroy relationships. In today’s society, the culture of "me first" has become the norm, often celebrated as independence or self-love. However, in the kingdom of God, these attitudes are contrary to the life of Christ and the spirit of service He demonstrated.

The root of selfishness is pride and an overemphasis on self-worth at the expense of others. It blinds a person to the needs, feelings, and welfare of those around them. It also isolates people spiritually, making it difficult to experience the fullness of God’s blessings which often come through selfless service and love.

In this study, we will examine the dangers of selfishness and self-centeredness, explore their consequences, and learn how to overcome them through humility, love, and service, just as Christ modelled.

1. UNDERSTANDING SELFISHNESS AND SELF-CENTEREDNESS

Selfishness is placing one's own needs, desires, and interests above all others, while self-centeredness is being excessively preoccupied with oneself.

a) Selfishness is Contrary to God's Nature.

God is love, and love does not seek its own (1 Corinthians 13:5).

b) Self-Centeredness Breeds Isolation.

It drives people away and breaks meaningful relationships (Proverbs 18:1).

c) It Hinders Spiritual Growth.

A selfish heart resists correction, accountability, and godly service (James 3:16).

d) It is a Sign of the Last Days.

Self-love and pride are among the traits of people in perilous times (2 Timothy 3:1-2).

Biblical Example: The rich fool who hoarded his goods and lost everything (Luke 12:16-21).

2. THE DANGERS AND CONSEQUENCES OF SELFISHNESS

Selfishness not only affects others but also has severe consequences for the one who practices it.

a) It Damages Relationships.

Selfish attitudes create conflict and distrust among family, friends, and church members (James 4:1).

b) It Blocks Divine Favour.

God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

c) It Produces Spiritual Blindness.

Self-centered individuals often fail to see their spiritual need or the needs of others (Revelation 3:17).

d) It Leads to Eternal Loss.

Those who live only for themselves may forfeit eternal rewards (Matthew 25:41-46).

Biblical Example: The rich man who ignored Lazarus and ended up in torment (Luke 16:19-31).

3. CULTIVATING A SELFLESS AND OTHERS-FOCUSED LIFE

God calls us to live not for ourselves, but to serve others in love and humility.

a) Esteem Others Better Than Yourself.

Consider the welfare of others before your own interests (Philippians 2:3).

b) Practice Generosity and Hospitality.

Open your heart and resources to those in need (Hebrews 13:16).

c) Serve in Love.

True greatness in the kingdom comes through serving others (Matthew 20:26-28).

d) Encourage and Build Up Others.

Look for ways to uplift and strengthen those around you (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Biblical Example: The Good Samaritan who went out of his way to help a stranger (Luke 10:30-37).

4. EMBRACING THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST

Jesus is the perfect model of selflessness and sacrificial love, and we are called to follow His example.

a) Christ Came Not to Be Served but to Serve.

He gave His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

b) He Laid Down His Rights for Others.

Though equal with God, He humbled Himself for our sake (Philippians 2:5-8).

c) He Was Moved with Compassion.

Jesus consistently put others' needs ahead of His own comfort (Matthew 14:14).

d) He Gave Himself Completely.

His life was a full sacrifice for the benefit of mankind (John 10:11).

Biblical Example: Jesus washing the disciples' feet as a symbol of humility and service (John 13:3-17).

5. DEVELOPING A KINGDOM MINDSET

To overcome selfishness, we must think beyond ourselves and embrace God’s vision for community and service.

a) Understand You Are Part of a Body.

Every believer has a role that benefits others (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).

b) Bear One Another’s Burdens.

Helping others is fulfilling the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).

c) Be a Blessing, Not a Burden.

Strive to add value to others and meet their needs (Romans 15:1-2).

d) Live for Eternal Impact.

Invest your time, energy, and resources in things that have eternal value (Matthew 6:19-21).

Biblical Example: The early church that lived in unity, shared all things, and cared for one another (Acts 2:44-47).

CONCLUSION:

Selfishness and self-centeredness are enemies of true Christian living. They diminish our effectiveness, hinder our growth, and stand in opposition to the nature of God. But by following Christ’s example and living with a heart for others, we can break free from these attitudes.
