B. “Go to Jordan and thou shalt see the Trinity”
1. In Christ’s baptism.
Matthew 3:16 “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:”
Matthew 3:17 “And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
As the Spirit descended upon the Son in bodily form as a dove, the voice of the Father was heard identifying and authenticating His Son. By this association of Persons, the
Holy Spirit is marked out not only as personal, but as divine. His deity is the necessary consequence of His personality, for the qualities attributed to His personality involve deity. (pg 24) The Holy Spirit and His Gifts J. Oswald Sanders
2. In the baptism of all to follow Him. (Note: In the name, not names.)
Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."
C. Relating God and the Holy Ghost
1. Lying to the Holy Ghost is equated with lying to God.
Acts 5:3 “But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back [part) of the price of the land?”
Acts 5:4 “Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”
2. Paul speaks of the Lord as the Spirit and makes a direct association of One
with the Other.
II Cor. 3:17 “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord [is), there [is) liberty.”
I Corinthians 12:4-6 "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all."
D. Deity of the Holy Ghost
1. The Holy Ghost is Eternal.
Hebrews 9:14 "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"
2. The Holy Ghost is Omnipresent.
Psalm 139:7-10 "Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me."
3. The Holy Ghost is Omnipotent.
Luke 1:35 "And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the
Son of God."
4. The Holy Ghost is Omniscient.
1 Corinthians 2:10-11 "For God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."
