INTRODUCTION:
The Christian life is not to be lived by human strength alone. From Genesis to Revelation, we see that God's people accomplished great exploits not because of their abilities, but because of the supernatural empowerment of the Holy Spirit. When God calls a man or woman, He equips them with divine strength to fulfil His purpose.
Supernatural empowerment refers to the divine ability given by God to perform beyond natural limits. It is the hand of God resting upon a person for exceptional function. It causes ordinary people to do extraordinary things, not for self-glory but to reveal God's power and glory on the earth.
Today, we will examine scriptural examples of people who were empowered supernaturally to fulfil divine assignments. These examples will stir our faith and hunger for the same power that is available to believers today through the Holy Spirit.
1. MOSES – EMPOWERED TO DELIVER ISRAEL
God supernaturally empowered Moses to confront Pharaoh and lead Israel out of Egypt.
a) Divine Encounter: Moses' burning bush experience marked the beginning of divine empowerment (Exodus 3:1–12).
b) Signs and Wonders: God gave Moses miraculous signs to perform before Pharaoh (Exodus 4:1–9).
c) Leadership Beyond Ability: Though a stammerer, Moses became a national leader by God's power (Exodus 4:10–12).
d) Miraculous Deliverance: He parted the Red Sea by divine authority (Exodus 14:21–31).
Biblical Example: Moses’ rod became a tool for divine exploits.
2. SAMSON – EMPOWERED WITH DIVINE STRENGTH
Samson was a man whose physical strength came directly from the Spirit of God.
a) Nazirite Calling: Samson was separated unto God from the womb (Judges 13:5).
b) Unusual Strength: He tore a lion with bare hands (Judges 14:5–6).
c) Victory over Enemies: He killed a thousand men with the jawbone of a donkey (Judges 15:14–16).
d) Final Feat: Even in death, God empowered him to destroy the temple of Dagon (Judges 16:28–30).
Biblical Example: Samson's strength was tied to his covenant and the Spirit of the Lord.
3. DAVID – EMPOWERED TO DEFEAT GOLIATH
David’s confidence and power against Goliath were results of divine empowerment.
a) Faith and Courage: David faced Goliath not with weapons, but in God's name (1 Samuel 17:45).
b) Prepared in Secret: He had already defeated lions and bears by God’s help (1 Samuel 17:34–36).
c) Strategic Wisdom: God guided his hands with precision (1 Samuel 17:49).
d) Influence through Empowerment: David rose to kingship by divine favour and power (2 Samuel 5:10).
Biblical Example: David’s victory over Goliath was not military but spiritual.
4. ELIJAH AND ELISHA – EMPOWERED FOR THE PROPHETIC
These prophets operated in supernatural power to declare God's word and perform miracles.
a) Calling Down Fire: Elijah demonstrated God's power on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:36–39).
b) Speed by the Spirit: He outran Ahab’s chariot by divine strength (1 Kings 18:46).
c) Double Portion: Elisha received greater empowerment than his mentor (2 Kings 2:9–14).
d) Miracle Ministry: Elisha healed water, multiplied oil, and raised the dead (2 Kings 4–6).
Biblical Example: Elisha’s axe-head miracle (2 Kings 6:1–7) showed God's concern for daily needs.
5. NEW TESTAMENT BELIEVERS – EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
After Jesus’ resurrection, believers received the Holy Spirit for power and witness.
a) Pentecost Encounter: The disciples received power with visible evidence (Acts 2:1–4).
b) Bold Evangelism: Peter, once timid, preached and 3,000 souls were saved (Acts 2:14–41).
c) Miracles and Healing: The lame walked, the dead were raised (Acts 3:1–10, Acts 9:36–42).
d) Unusual Miracles: Paul’s handkerchiefs healed the sick (Acts 19:11–12).
Biblical Example: Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders (Acts 6:8).
CONCLUSION:
Supernatural empowerment is not reserved for Bible characters alone. It is the birthright of every Spirit-filled believer. The same Spirit that empowered Moses, David, Elijah, and the apostles is available to us today. We only need to yield, believe, and walk in obedience.
In these end times, the Church must rise in power, not just in words but in demonstration of the Spirit. God is looking for vessels He can empower for kingdom exploits. Will you be one?
