Revivals and Riots

Wherever Paul went he had either a revival or a riot

Strange that his revivals were sometimes in prison and his riots in the temple … but no so strange

In his text he had both

Revival at an Unusual Time

Revivals have characteristically come at an unusual time and place

The blessings of a revived church

I. 2 Christians in real prayer

a. Paul & Silas prayed

i. No wonder they prayed

ii. Blessed is the affliction that drives us to our knees

iii. But theses men prayed before trouble came (v. 16)

b. When they prayed…at midnight

i. This may seem to be your darkest hour

ii. But its never too dark to pray

iii. Our God delights to work in the dark

c. Prayer is always the foundation of revival

i. D.L. Moody is quoted as saying “Every great work of God can be traced to a kneeling figure”

ii. Calling churches to prayer…you may be the key

d. How they prayed: Specifically, believingly

II. 2 Christians with the right attitude (v.25)

a. “…and sang praises”

b. The praying is not strange. The praising is the miracle

i. Reasons they might have been depressed:

1. They had obeyed the Macedonian call (v.9)

2. They had been winning souls (vv.14-15)

3. They had been prayerful (v. 16)

4. They had been sensitive to the need of the demon-possessed woman and released her (vv. 16-18)

c. Nevertheless they praised God!!

i. Focused on God’s power instead of their problems

ii. Belied that God would deliver them

iii. Identified with Jesus, the stocks, the darkness, striped

d. The value of Praise

e. Its easy to Praise God when all is Well but its harder to Praise him when we are low what is more valuable

III. 2 Christians in the Right Place (v. 28)

a. The earthquake, freedom, opportunity to escape

b. The jailor’s fears. Paul’s surprising statement

c. Christians in the right place

i. In relation to the church, all of the services

ii. In relation to the world, separation

iii. In relation to the Lord, abiding in Him

IV. 2 Christians with the Right Message (v. 31)

a. The greatest question “What must I do to be saved?”

b. The only answer “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ”
