This sermon explores God's providence, the power of perseverance, and the promise of deliverance, as illustrated in Jeremiah 38:1-28.

Introduction

Good morning, beloved family of God. Isn't it a joy to gather together in His presence once again? To be able to sit in the shadow of His love, basking in the warmth of His grace, and feasting on the nourishment of His Word? I am excited to share with you today a message from the book of Jeremiah, specifically, chapter 38 verses 1 to 28.

We have a rich treasure trove of inspiration and instruction in this passage, a vivid picture of God's providence, the power of perseverance, and the promise of deliverance. It's a message that speaks to the core of our faith, to the heart of our hope, and to the depth of our devotion.

Providence of God in Jeremiah's Life

In the life of Jeremiah, we see the hand of God working in ways that are both mysterious and miraculous. The circumstances he found himself in were far from ideal. He was thrown into a cistern, sinking into the mud, with death seemingly imminent. Yet, even in this dire situation, God's providence was at work.

The first aspect we can observe is God's protection over Jeremiah. Despite the plot against his life, Jeremiah was not abandoned. He was in a cistern, yes, but he was not forgotten. God, in His infinite wisdom and perfect timing, moved the heart of Ebed-Melek, a Cushite, to rescue Jeremiah. This is a clear demonstration of God's providential care, His ability to shield and safeguard His servants even in the most perilous situations.

Secondly, we see God's provision. Jeremiah was in a pit with no means of escape. Yet, God provided a way out for him. Ebed-Melek didn't just hear about Jeremiah's predicament, he was moved to act. He took old rags and worn-out clothes, let them down with ropes into the cistern, and pulled Jeremiah out. This was no coincidence, but a divine orchestration. God provided the means and the man to deliver Jeremiah from his predicament.

Thirdly, we see God's power. The officials wanted Jeremiah dead. They believed his words were causing harm and not good. Yet, despite their plans, Jeremiah lived. This was not because of Jeremiah's strength or cunning, but because of God's power. God overruled the plans of the officials, demonstrating that His purposes cannot be thwarted.

Lastly, we see God's promise. Jeremiah had been prophesying the fall of Jerusalem. He had been speaking words that were hard to hear. Yet, in the midst of his suffering, God's promise remained. The city would be given into the hands of the Babylonians, but those who surrendered would live. Despite the bleak circumstances, God's promise of deliverance remained.
