Redeemed

Our text verses today are as follow’s.

Galatians 3:13; "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"

1 Peter 1:18-19; "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:"

Revelation 5:9-10; "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth."

Prayer

Heavenly Father; Meet us here today. Speak to each heart, beginning with my own. Draw the lost to Christ for salvation, restore the fallen child. Bless this word to Thy glory. In Jesus Christ our Lord.

Redeemed how I love to proclaim it.

These words were written by Fanny Cosby, a blind saint of God, who wrote over 20,000 hymns and poems.

The word "Redeemed" is used some 62 times in the Bible. Most of which are found in the Old Testament. Fifty-five times to be exact. Only seven times in the New Testament the word "Redeemed" is used. Three of which we read in our text verses.

There are eight definitions of the word from the Hebrew language, and four from the Greek

In all eight definitions from the Old Testament Hebrew, the word is almost identical with the exception of one usage. The same is true of the New Testament word "Redeemed" as all four definitions say practically the same thing. Both the Old Testament word and the New Testament word means; "to release, to deliver, to rescue, to recover, buy back, to ransom."

It’s First Use

The first use of the word Redeemed is found in Genesis 48:16, "The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."

Jacob’s name had now become Israel, a change that was made by God. Israel was giving his parting blessing to the two sons of Joseph; Ephraim and Manasseth. The statement that Israel (Jacob) made was to the LORD. A prayer by Israel to God for his grandsons.

The angel that Israel spoke of here was none other than the preincarnate Christ. The angel that wrestled with Jacob at the ford Jabbok, by a brook. This is where Jacob’s name was forever changed. The angel redeemed Jacob (Israel) then from all evil.This redemption was the forgiveness of his past sins. Redemption does just that, it means that we have been bought back. As we were once only a sinful creature, we now have been redeemed by the blood of Christ.

Exodus 21:8, "If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her."

In this passage redemption speaks of a daughter being sold to be a maidservant, and if her master is not pleased with her; "then shall he let her be redeemed."

Leviticus 25:30, "And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile."

This use of redemption tells us of a dwelling house in a walled city being redeemed within a full year of it’s selling.

Leviticus 27:28, "Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he hath, both of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto the LORD." Redemption here tells of the devoted thing to the LORD is not to be sold or redeemed.

Numbers 18:16, "And those that are to be redeemed from a month old shalt thou redeem, according to thine estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs." Here we see the Bible speaking of the redeeming of the firstling of all flesh being redeemed from a month old.
