Summary: This Second Sunday of Advent the gospel writer tells us that John the Baptist say repent the Lord id coming Get ready.
Matthew 3:1–12 REPENT
1. Repent so our life’s can preach the Gospel
• John appears in the wilderness, dressed like Elijah, eating locusts and honey. His life itself is a sermon.
• He fulfills Isaiah 40:3: “A voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord.”
• John’s preaching of the gospel was urgent: the kingdom of heaven is near. Repentance is the doorway to heaven
• Be a voice crying out in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord make his paths straight. Repent so our life’s can preach the gospel.
2. Clothes don’t matter repentance matters
• Zachariah's clothing Johns father dressed As a priest, he was meant to wear garments that represented glory and beauty,
• His garments were fine linen, a coat, a sash, an ephod, a breastplate, a turban, and a golden plate
• John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist. Priests never wore leather His food was locusts and wild honey.
• Glory, beauty, priestly garments, leather belt, camels hair, food locust and wild honey doesn’t matter repentance does matter
•
3. Repent so you can catch fire so others will come and watch us burn
• Many came to watch John burn 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.
• When they came out they to caught fire and confessed their sins and were baptized
• When we repent it’s contagious others repent and catch fire
• When we turn from wicked beliefs, wicked ways, wicked or un-holiness we burn with a different fire the fire of God
4. Repent so we will depend on God
• One Theologian said, “Pharisees and Sadducees come, relying on ancestry and religious status. John calls them a “brood of vipers.”
• They seemingly depended on something else other than God
• John tells them to flee from the wrath to come.
• Repent and believe the Gospel Jesus born a baby, Jesus died, Jesus arose , Jesus ascended, and Jesus is coming back. Depend on the cross of Christ
5. Repent so we can have peace
• When we repent, we find peace with God, peace within ourselves, and peace with others.
• Scripture: “The Lord is not slow… but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
• John encouraged the Pharisees and Sadducee's all people to bring fruit worthy of baptism so they can have peace
6. Repent for the season of Advent is here and maybe the coming of Christ
• 11 “I baptize you with[b] water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.
• Let’s turn around, let’s change direction, Let’s repent making space for Jesus
• John’s fiery words remind us: Jesus is coming soon.
• He speaks of wheat and chaff—what is fruitful will be gathered, what is empty will be burned.
• Repent so our life’s will preach the Gospel, Repentance is all that matters not the clothes, Repent catch fire so others will watch us burn, Repent s we will only depend on God, Repent so we can have peace of heart and mind, Repent He Came He died He arose He is coming
