Summary: Proverbs 5

Wisdom | Proverbs 05

My son, pay attention to my wisdom…

- Wisdom does well when it is given undivided attention.

That you may preserve discretion…

- Discretion is something we must continue to fight for.

For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey...

- Honey is sweet (represents the temptation)

- Her lips refers to her speech; the 1st steps towards temptation is almost always by what is communicated.

The oil of an immoral woman…

- Oil symbolized gladness and prosperity; its absence indicated sorrow or humiliation.

In the end she is bitter as wormwood…

- Her sweetness becomes bitter; her smooth oil becomes sharp.

Her feet go down to death, her ways are unstable…

- She is leading herself and others to death; she is unstable (not just her ways) as her temptation is to invite someone else along with her. She is drowning, she knows it and she is trying to drag as many with her as she can.

- A moral and stable person would say: If I really love this person, I would not act against their best interest and serve my own will. If I love this person, I will respect them and express my love in a way that honors them and God.

Remove your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house…

- Stay away from immoral women (stay away from their presence and wherever they reside). The best defense against them is to not be present where they are.

- 2 Tim. 2:22: Flee from youthful lusts.

o The longer you stay in the presence of temptation, the stronger it becomes.

Lest you give your honor to others and your years to the cruel one; lest aliens be filled with your wealth, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner…

- When you fall into the sin of sexual immorality, there are things you lose. It begins with honor that is lost; I would have been honored to give myself to my wife on our wedding night.

- Sex can take away years and enjoyment – pornography traps us into a comparison game.

- Two people engaged in intercourse look like they are having a great time and that gives us this mental picture that they get along, their relationship is great; everything about them is great and the opposite is true.

- Sexual immorality can lead to a loss of income.

- STD’s, child support, alimony, broken homes / relationships.

When your flesh and body are consumed:

- STD’s, health issues.

How I hated instruction! In the midst of the assembly and congregation.

- The promise of sexual immorality is pleasure; the price of sexual immorality is regret.

- When I fall into temptation, my heart moves further away from Christ.

- There is an attempt to keep sexual immorality a secret but it is exposed. (The sin, the foolishness, the betrayal and the lack of self-control is exposed).

Drink water from your own cistern, and running water from your own well…let your fountain be blessed and rejoice with the wife of your youth. Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and always be enraptured with her love...

- Drink water from your own cistern: Be mindful, be thankful, be grateful for what God has already provided for you.

- Running water from your own well: God’s provision for sexual needs is found within marriage.

- Sex is worship! “God created sex not only for reproduction but also for enjoyment, and He didn’t put the ‘marriage wall’ around sex to rob us of pleasure but to increase pleasure and protect it.” (Wiersbe)

Why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman…

- Solomon’s further response is (if married) why give up something a blessing for an empty / fleeting moment?

For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord…

- We can’t hide sin!
