Our Big God!
Ps 139:1-17
INTRO: Message is to get us our of a little God Syndrome
1. We come to church where we have placed God in a box
a. We come & watch Him up on stage in the music &
preaching but He is limited to that place only
1. He doesn’t go home with us, our lives are unaffected by Him
2. We are afraid to let Him out of His box, … He might mess things up
b. Worship is about seeing God in ALL His wonder & Glory
1. Worship takes place when we see God, See Him as He is BIG!
2. *Magic Eyes: a New way of looking at the World
a. Stare intently, concentrate, focus with all your attention on
the page and the picture will be revealed
b. Same with the pages of God’s Word
1. We are to concentrate, focus upon the written pages of God’s
revelation of Himself
c. There God will reveal & expose His greatness
1. Ps 139 is a poetic picture of God, How big God is
2. Say it with me: God is Big! We have a BIG God!
3. The Bigger that God is, the more truth is illuminated in our
hearts & minds
a. Greater understanding of life, our world, eternity have
b. The Greater our commitment will be
1. I don’t need to challenge you to obey God I should not have to
belittle you into being obedient or committed to the lord Jesus
2. When you see God for who He is, In All His majesty, Greatness &
Bigness You’ll love Him more & automatically be more committed
c. With a Big God our worship, Obedience, commitment &
love will be bigger & better
4. How big is God?
I. v1-4 God is a Know it ALL God
A. Omniscient Omni + Science God knows Everything
1. God is soooo Big He knows everything there is to know
2. Don’t have a God puzzled, befuddled, worried, in the dark
or ignorant about you, your life or anything else. Wonderful news
3. Effects my Prayer Life
a. Don’t Pray “Lord I don’t know if you know about Sally sue & her
health problems… or Joe don’s family marital troubles or even
Bubba who lost his job this week
b. Symptom of Little God Syndrome is we talk to Him as if
we don’t thin He knows what is going on
c. God Doesn’t say: “Awww Their having a crisis in that family? I didn’t know, me & the angels were over in Africa & was soo busy. Hold on I’ll get right to it
1. God doesn’t go into panic mode for being caught off guard
a. He doesn’t have brain freeze nor does He sleep during the night &
wake up to new troubles He wasn’t aware of
d. God knows EVERYTHING about you, me, about what is,
what is to be, you name it, He knows it
1. That gives me a LOT of security AMEN??
a. Pray now with assurance that when I come to Him He is totally
aware of what is going on
b. My prayer is about telling God about what is going on, but it helps
me, blesses me to unload, to know He is aware and all is going
according to His divine plan and that He has all the answers
4. Effects My Ethics Life
a. Tax time, those so called deductions IRS may not know
but God does
b. Changes the way we handle our self at work, we don’t flirt
with the secretary, though the wife may not know,
1. God Knows
c. Changes the way we treat other people at school
1. Call that person who is different a crude & rude name
2. Think only you & the buddy knows, but God also knows
5. We limit God by the way we live, we live as if we can get
by with sin
a. Live as if God isn’t around, isn’t listening, isn’t aware,
doesn’t know living in a Little God Syndrome
b. The Devil loves to whisper in our ears, Go ahead
1. Do what you want, do what feels good. Say those nasty words, get
even with that person. Lay out of services
2. He whispers, “Nobody knows”
6. On earth, maybe nobody knows But God Knows
a. That changes the way I worship, the way I think, the way
Pray, the way I live life
7. When I ran from God, He called me to the ministry
a. I tried to pull a Jonah went the other way
1. I knew better but I didn’t it stupidly anyway
b. All that time I was in bars & dens of iniquity God knew
where I was I knew He knew it I was miserable
1. Knowing God knows all things is the truth that got me
a. I knew He knew my life, my fears, my future, yet He wanted me to
serve Him I could no longer run
8. Ever try to find a place with out a map, without ever been
there before or without somebody who knows the way
a. Very frustrating, confusing & scary Bad dangerous areas
b. But Get somebody in the car with you who knows
everything there is to know about the area
1. All is cool, all is sweet, all is goood
c. That is the way it is when God who knows it all takes us
where we need to go
1. all is cool, no fears all is sweet & good
9. That is when we realize that God is Omniscient
a. Omniscient means ______?____
II. v7-9 God is a Everywhere God
A. Omnipresence = Present everywhere
1. Everywhere where is God? Do you believe that? Don’t think so
a. Of course we believe that Preacher, That is what Baptists
believe
1. You do? You live a life believing that God is present everywhere?
a. Walk through life realizing God is there there there there there
there there there there there there
1. More fun isn’t it
2. Wal-mart, school, barn yard, football stadium work, in car
b. God is everywhere, all places
c. Do you realize how easy it is to worship Him out there?
1. He is out There, what about in here? Easy! He is here!
2. But we have tried to contain him, keep Him at the church
house. Boxed Him in these walls
a. So we don’t worship, serve or commune with Him any
other time but here or a “Event”
1. Revival, or Falls Creek or VBS or Bible Study God has become an
event connected to a location rather that Our god whom we have a
relationship with
3. There is that Little God syndrome where we
compartmentalize God.
a. We worship God at church, at meeting, at events Only
b. Folk, We are to worship God everyday, everywhere
1. Our God lives with in us therefore is not limited to events, or to a
location
2. Worship/church is where God meets His people 1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
4. Be with prayers God be with… I am there
a. The problem isn’t that God isn’t there, but us not seeing he
is there.
1. The issue isn’t God, but the issue is you & me
b. We pray for God to be with somebody or to come down to
our services
1. The problem is we need to see Him already here
2. Don’t need to pray not for God to come down or be with but we or
they open our human eyes to See His presence
**Elisha & the host surrounding the enemies The king of Syria had sent an army to find the Prophet Elisha. He was mad at him for warning Israel of Syria’s treacherous plans. Army surrounded the city. Elisha’s servant feared. 2Ki 6:17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain [was] full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
4. When we can see the presence of God it sure makes life
more enjoyable, easier to Know we are neither alone nor abandoned to
our own devices or enemies
5. How many lose something, you look, you search, you rant &
rave & threaten kids only to find it on your head or in your pocket or
even in your hand
a. That is the way a lot of people do with God, go looking for
him in an experience, in a worship service at the church house
1. But He is Spirit & Truth He isn’t to be limited to a fixed place or
event
2. Many think he has to found in the wilderness, the cosmos, on a
Mountain or confession booth
3. God is to be found in the person of Jesus
b. God is so easy to find, He is always near if you look you
will find Pr 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
Jer 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find [me], when ye shall search for me with all your heart. 1. Just look
2. Problems, marriage, relationship, school troubles, job issues He
is there
6. It is not that God is present everywhere. But that All of God
is everywhere All at the same time
a. say the word -_omnipresence___
b. How did you come in here a while ago? Hopefully not
next Sunday
1. Time to sing we have arms crossed, Sister Sour puss
a. Refuse to smile, we’re in God’s house..
1. as if instead of bulletins handed out, we gave away lemons & they
put them in their mouth
2. How can we come into a service, Knowing our BIG God is present
& not get excited & passionate?
c. I want to know God, I want to know this God who created the
world, sent His son to die on the Cross & totally in Africa , In
England Indonesia Florida hurricane path, Antarctica & Arcadia at
the same time
III. v12-16 God is the Almighty God
A, Omnipotent omni - Potent All powerful, all Mighty
1. Means God sits on a Throne = Enthroned, Sovereign
a. He exercises absolute control of everything
1. God doesn’t have some control but ALL control
b. Can God heal somebody? Repeat YES
c. Can God pick this room up & place it in another city? Yes
2. Here again is that “Little God Syndrome
a. Our Prayer, “Lord I have a problem, I don’t know if you can, but, if
you can, would you help me?”
b. He says, “Would I help you?” we are acting as if He is limited
c. We refuse to trust God’s power to take care of us, to meet
our needs how do I know, strive, struggle to get but
1. We don’t ask Him to Jas 4:1-2 From whence [come] wars and fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
2. We don’t trust him with our family or life our substance
a. If we did, we would do it His way
b. But we don’t think God’s way is best, that god is capable of
blessing our homes or that He can fulfill His promises
3. When we acknowledge, realize How powerful God is
a. It will change our life, we will live in faith, we will trust
Him by Obeying Him. We will be totally committed to Him
b. When we Know He sits on His throne, we know He is in
charge & we will quit fretting over the world’s conditions
1. We look at the surface, the terrorism, the fuel prices, the violence,
the dysfunctional families, the political
2. We are not looking up to the Throne we are not believing in His
Omnipotence
4. Our greatest trouble in our church this morning isn’t sin.
Always has been & always will be. Sadly. We come to confess
& be forgiven
a. Every day we are to confess of sin, next week we are to
come, but there will be sin again
b. The Trouble is too many of can’t see God in all His Power,
glory and Bigness
1. Isaiah (Is 6) saw Him in His glory & fell down ‘woe is me of
unclean lips it changed Isaiah & his ministry
2. John the Beloved on Isle of Patmos saw Jesus (Rev 1) in His shining
Glory, He fell as dead, Jesus touches him & comforts him then
reveals the future
c. When we see God as all Knowing, All Present & all
powerful plus all Loving for He is Love
1. It will change our worship, our passion, our Prayers, our excitement
level our life
5. Somebody be honest enough today to admit you come with
the little God Syndrome
a. You keep in a box, limit Him & just do not trust Him cause
you can’t see His Greatness
b. But now you are getting a glimpse, You want to see more
1. You want Him to take over your life, to fix your marriage your
eternal security, your relationships with kids
2. You want to worship with excitement & passion
3. Come, come & lay yourself in His big hands
4. Our God is Big enough to love even you & to take care of you in all
our needs & inadequacies
