The Movie

France is embroiled in the The Hundred Years War with England, and young Jeanne d’Aragon (milla Jovovich) hears the voice of God telling her to lead the French army into battle and defend their land against the British. Jeanne is dubbed “Joan of Arc,” and she bravely guides her army in holy battle.

This Clip:

Start 1:49:14 “Who are you?”

Stop 1:50:25 Ends with Joan of Arc receiving several slaps to the face.

Joan is being held captive by the British when Satan (Dustin Hoffman) pays her a visit. When Joan asks Satan about his identity, he tries to confuse her by changing his appearance to resemble the young boy and later the young man she saw in her visions when God confirmed that he had chosen her for a special purpose. Once Joan rebukes Satan, he tries a new tactic where he mentally and spiritually tries to beat Joan down by questioning her ability to judge between good and evil and mocking her for thinking God needs her help. Despite her state of physical weakness, Joan holds on to what she knows is true and resists Satan’s lies.

Scripture Text: Galatians 1:1-24

1Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead—2and all the brothers with me,

To the churches in Galatia:

3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

6I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—7which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

10Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

11I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. 12I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

13For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. 14I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. 15But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased 16to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man, 17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus.

18Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter and stayed with him fifteen days. 19I saw none of the other apostles—only James, the Lord’s brother. 20I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie. 21Later I went to Syria and Cilicia. 22I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23They only heard the report: “The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” 24And they praised God because of me.

Introduction:

Paul writes this book to deal with the Judaizers who were going around telling the Gentile Christians that they were not saved by grace but they were saved by works and they needed to circumcised and become like a Jew then they could become a Christian and be saved.

IVP BIBLE BACKGROUND COMMENTARY: TYPE OF LETTER

Although Galatians has apologetic elements (i.e., points where Paul seems to defend himself), Paul is not concentrating on the kind of *rhetoric used in law courts. Rather, Galatians is predominantly “deliberative rhetoric,” the kind of argumentation ancient speakers and writers used to persuade people to change their behavior. The argument itself is very rational, and the emotional language of the letter was standard rhetoric characteristic of stern letters (Galatians includes elements of ancient “letters of rebuke”).

Bible Knowledge Commentary states this about Galatians:

In the early church, as the separation between Judaism and Christianity was taking place, the letter to the Galatians no doubt helped clarify that cleavage. Centuries later it played such a key role in the Reformation that it was called “the cornerstone of the Protestant Reformation.” This was because its emphasis on salvation by grace through faith alone was the major theme of the preaching of the Reformers. Luther was especially attached to Galatians and referred to it as his wife. He lectured on the book extensively and his Commentary on Galatians was widely read by the common people.

The profound influence of this small epistle continues. It is indeed the “Magna Charta of Christian Liberty,” proclaiming to modern generations that salvation from the penalty and power of sin comes not by works but by grace through faith in God’s provision.

Paul uses his own testimony to convince the people that they have been deceived like he once was as a Pharisee. He gives the account of his conversion and reveals to the people in Galatia that these individuals who they believe are distorting the true Gospel. It’s actually a different gospel than the one preached by Jesus and the one in which he personally experienced himself. The message they are communicating does lead to liberty and freedom but bondage and condemnation.

T.S. – Let’s look at three points that ring out to us from Chapter one of Galatians.

I. Do not be deceived by a different message packaged in all its glitter and intellectual reasoning (Galatians 6:6-10).

a. The true Gospel message is not a man made doctrine.

i. Paul reminds the Galatia church and us this is not a man made Gospel.

1. It was created birthed and verified by the life and death of Jesus Christ.

2. It is revealed to us by the Revelation of Jesus Christ

b. The reason he knows this is it changed and transformed his own life. He noted that being a religious leader and a Jew did not save him.

i. This real Gospel transforms people’s lives like his own. Paul in chapter one gives his testimony to demonstrate what the true gospel is able to do. Take a religious murderer and transform his life into one who was willing to die for this Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was the real truth not a man made idea filled with hopelessness.

c. The Gospel of truth and the gospel of deception are two different belief systems:

i. Paul dealt with this group called the Judaizers a radical Christian group which went around stating that to get into a heaven a Gentile Christian male must be circumcised just like a Jew.

1. He gets so strong with his language in this book that in Chapter 3 he states to the Galatians:

a. 1You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.

b. Bewitched is defined by Holman Bible Dictionary -BEWITCH - KJV and NIV translation of two Greek words. In Galatians 3:1, Paul criticized the Galatians for being “captivated by the falsehood” (baskaino) of the Judaizers to the point of straying from the Gospel. The Greek word used here has a history in magical evil and the casting of spells. “Bewitch” is also used as a translation of another word (existemi) that modern versions translate as “amazed,” “astonish,” or “astound” (Acts 8:9, 11).

c. He was personally astonished that they were quickly deceived and so easily lured into a false belief system.

i. Jesus himself stated this same thing in the Gospel of Mark 6:1-6: 1Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! 3Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.” 5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6And he was amazed at their lack of faith.

ii. He became amazed at their lack of faith their lack of spiritual maturity and it hindered the Gospel in His own home town.

1. Jesus like Paul became amazed at how deceived people can become. How easily the truth is robbed and the lies are believed.

ii. Perverting the Gospel (1:6-10). (Following outline taken from Sam Stone Bible Outlines)

1. Even in the earliest days of Christianity, false teaching where apparent. Paul did not overlook it, pretending it did not exist; neither did he minimize it, saying it does not matter.

a. He addressed them with the boldness of the Holy Spirit and the truth of the Word of God.

b. We today need to do the same.

2. The Judaizers were teaching that a Gentile had to undergo circumcision, becoming a Jew before he could be a Christian. This was not the gospel that Paul and his colleagues had preached, but rather a perverted gospel.

a. Works will never earn us the gift of salvation. Salvation comes by grace alone and comes as a gift from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3. The truth, as he explained later (2:15-21), is that all people—Jews or Gentiles—are saved by faith in Christ, not by obeying the Mosaic law.

d. You may be thinking how does the Gospel get twisted and distorted in today’s world.

i. There are still groups out there who make the Gospel of Good News a works orientated salvation.

1. It’s clear that Paul and Jesus said we are saved by grace not works.

a. We can never on our own ability or good works earn our way into Heaven. We have to get our ticket to salvation from Jesus himself.

2. Romans 6:11-14: 11In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

a. We are under grace not the law which was all about works.

ii. But I also want you to know that salvation can be twisted and distorted from its original teaching by Jesus and the apostles.

1. Bonhoffer preached against another false gospel during World War 2 which he called “Cheap Grace Theology”

a. This deceptive belief system said that you ask the Lord to be you Savior and then that’s it.

i. You can go on sinning and be okay because you have grace.

ii. He challenged the Church of the day that this not the Gospel of Good News but a license to sin and turn their eyes away from the atrocities committed under their noses.

iii. Grace compels us to do good works and to live a holy life it is not a license to keep on sinning and ignoring the message of the Word of God.

2. Brian McLaren states his about the current concept of salvation in our society today this thought comes from Adventures In Missing The Point pages 19-21.

a. “Are you saved?” was the question that everyone understood meant one or all of the following:

*You had accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.

*You believed that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, and you believed his death, not your good deeds, made it possible for your sins to be forgiven.

*At the end of a church service, during the “invitation,” you had said “the sinners prayer,” then during the “invitation” walked to the front of the church – this was the “altar call” – or perhaps only raised your hand to acknowledge your conversion.

*You gained an assurance that you were going to heaven after you died.

b. I assure you, I think it’s good to be saved in this way. Yet I also think that the Bible has less to say about these four things than many Christians may think, Consider:

* The phrase accept Christ as your personal Savior is not in the Bible. Even personal Savior is absent from the pages of the Bible. In fact, the Bible seems to make the focus of salvation on us as a people, not on me as an individual.

# Today another false teaching or different gospel is being promoted called “Self-centered Christianity.”

* Having your sins forgiven is no doubt a part of (or a prelude to) salvation. But in the Bible salvation means much more than that: if anything, being forgiven is the starting line, not the finish line, of salvation.

* Nowhere in the Bible is the term sinners prayer mentioned, and no one in the Bible ever says it- at least not in the form that prospective converts are taught to say it today. And it wasn’t until the last 150 years or so that Christian services included “invitations” or “altar calls.” Furthermore, no one has ever or will ever walk down an aisle or raise a hand to “get saved.” Invitations, altar calls, and sinners prayers are wonderful and often useful traditions or rituals- I just don’t think that salvation lies in them.

#The act of salvation is not just a one time event with no life change and an altered lifestyle reflecting the characteristics of Jesus in us.

* If you asked the apostle Paul, “If you were to die tonight, do you know for certain that you would be with God in heaven?” I’m certain Paul would have said yes. But he probably would have given you a funny look and wondered why you were asking this question, because to him it missed the point. To Paul the point of being Christ’s follower was not just to help people be absolutely certain they were going to heaven after they died. Paul’s goal was to help them become fully formed, mature in Christ, here and now-to experience the glorious realities of being in Christ and experiencing Christ themselves.

c. So if we are distorting the point about salvation what is it?

d. Brian adds, “So is salvation for you a one time experience?” “Or is it a life long Journey?” …”Is salvation about stepping across a line-or is it about crossing a starting line to begin an unending adventure in this life and beyond” (27)?

e. He clarifies his point by sharing, “The Parable of the Race” pages 26-27.

i. Consider the Parable of the Race. Once upon a time, in a land of boredom and drudgery, exciting news spread: “There is going to be a race! And all who run this race will grow strong and they’ll never be bored again!” Exciting news like this had not been heard for many a year, for people attending committee meetings, waiting in lines, sorting socks, and watching sitcom reruns. Excitement grew as the day of the race drew near. Thousands gathered in the appointed town, at the appointed place. Most came to observe, skeptical about the news. “It’s too good to be true, “they said, “Its just silly rumor started by some teenaged troublemakers. But let’s stick around and see what happens anyway.” Others could not resist the invitation, arriving in their running shorts and shoes. As they waited for the appointed time, they stretched and jogged in place and chattered among themselves with nervous excitement. At the appointed time they gathered at the starting line, heard the gun go off, and knew that it was time to run. Then something very curious happened. The runners took a step or two or three across the starting line, and then abruptly stopped. One man fell to his knees, crying, “I have crossed the starting line! This is the happiest day of my life!” He repeated this again and again, and even began singing a song about how happy this day was for him. Another woman started jumping for joy. “Yes!” she shouted, raising her fist in the air. “I am a race-runner! I am finally a race-runner!” She ran around jumping and dancing getting and giving high fives to others who shared her joy at being in the race. Several people formed a circle and prayed, quietly thanking God for the privilege of crossing the starting line, and thanking God that they were not like the skeptics who didn’t come dressed for the race. An hour passed, and two. Spectators began muttering; some laughed. “So what do they think this race is?” they said. “Two or three strides, then a celebration? And why do they feel superior to us? They’re treating the starting line as if it were a finish line. They’ve completely missed the point.” A few more minutes of this silliness passed. “You know,” a spectator said to the person next to her, “If they’re not going to run the race, maybe we should.” “Why not? It’s getting boring watching them hang around just beyond the starting line. I’ve had enough boredom for one life.” Others heard them, and soon many were kicking off their dress shoes, slipping out of their jackets, throwing all this unneeded clothing on the grass. And they ran-past the praying huddles and past the crying individuals and past the jumping high-fivers. And they found hope and joy in every step, and they grew stronger with every mile and hill. To their surprise, the path never ended-because in this race, there was no finish line. So they were never bored again.

f. Listen to what Mclaren stated earlier and think about it, “So is salvation for you a one time experience?” “Or is it a life long Journey?” …”Is salvation about stepping across a line-or is it about crossing a starting line to begin an unending adventure in this life and beyond” (27)?

i. Now think of this statement from the Apostle Paul:

ii. I Cor. 9:24-27: 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

iii. 2 Timothy 4:6-8: 6For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

iv. Heb. 12:1: 1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

g. Paul did not believe salvation was hanging around the starting line and dancing in circles going nowhere but it was getting to the finish line.

iii. Tony Campolo states from the same book, “Salvation is not just believing the doctrines. Salvation is a lifetime of asking, “What would Jesus do?” … then comes the moment to decide.

1. The point is will we run the race or just dance and cry around the starting line the rest of our life.

e. Jesus preached about the people who would be changed by the Gospel and be a new kind of people living in this world being the salt and the light in this dark world of sin and hopelessness.

i. Christians are to run the race for Jesus and make a difference in people’s lives by doing good works. Paul stated it often:

1. Phil 1:3-6: 3I thank my God every time I remember you. 4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

2. Phil. 2:12, 13: 12Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

ii. Jesus said it in Matthew 7:16 :

1. 15“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ 24“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” 28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

2. Jesus himself made it clear that a Christian will be known by the fruit they produce in running the race and serving others.

3. Jesus promised that sin would be dealt with as he used the Fig tree as an example to what happens when you do not produce fruit.

4. Side note of something I came across this week about the recent tragedy in the south: Prophecy to New Orleans – A warning to all cities do not buy into a different Gospel. July 22, 2005- Houston, TX

Servants of God:

Enough of past curses reminding you of yesterday’s failures. Enough of New Orleans and its treachery. Enough of stealing the Ark of the Covenant from my people just because you had those surrounding you that had no faith. Caleb said we are able to take this land. Joshua said we are able to take this land. But ten voices arose against the Lord God. And they would stone my servant Moses and say let us stone them and raise up another leader so that we may go back to Egypt. Would you go back to your dung? Would you go back to your vomit? O New Orleans God speaks to you from Houston tonight and says enough of this! For a judgment is coming says the Spirit of the Lord, and I will take the men that have stood in faith, raise them above the flood that shall destroy those that constantly bicker and stand against my servant Moses, or my servant Bilbo. I want you to understand there are great men in New Orleans that have faith but you have been set aside not to lose but to win. Enough of this! For I will take the curses and the bodies will even rise and they will come forth on the water, but I will keep you and the stench of death will only last a few days. And then what I promised two years ago will come to pass for August, September and October of this year I made a promise it would happen, and God said be strengthened now, be strengthened now for enough is enough says the Lord.

Note: Mardi Graus web site New Orleans stated: No one really knows where or when the custom started -- and many of us don’t care! Some people trace it to the Romans, whose pagan orgies were held during the spring season. A few other places celebrate Mardi Gras, but no one does it like New Orleans -- the City that Care Forgot! Flashing women, party for drunks it does happen but only on Bourbon street after the parades.

T.S. – Remember do not be deceived but run the race and produce fruit. God’s Gospel promises judgment upon that which is evil. Deception can look very enticing and nicely packaged in all its tradition and knowledge and people just like Paul will continue to get sucked into the lies of legalistic religion if they are not careful.

II. Paul shares his testimony to show that he himself at one point in life was deceived and preached a different Gospel (Galatians 1:11-24).

a. He was delivered from this deceptive mindset after having a revelation of Jesus Christ on his way to Damascus (Acts 9:1-31).

i. Paul who once was called Saul is first introduced to us in Acts 8:1 - Saul was present at the stoning of Stephen and he gave his approval as a religious Pharisee for him to be put to death. Paul knows what it was like to become a victim of a deceptive dangerous legalistic religion.

ii. Paul is said to have been a major persecutor of the disciples and is know for his murderous threats against the disciples of Jesus.

iii. But Jesus appeared to him to convert this mixed up warped minded religious man and asked “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (9:4). Paul is confused and asks “Who are you, Lord?” Jesus replied “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Saul humbled overwhelmed and then converted is then instructed by the Lord to go up to the city and discover what he must do for Jesus. When he opens his eyes after the revelation he discovers that he is blind. Truth is he was blinded temporarily by the light so that he could have hands laid on him by Ananias and have his spiritual and natural sight healed.

1. So that he could see clearly what the truth was!

iv. Even Ananias shows apprehension about praying for Paul when the Lord reveals it to him because of Paul’s terrible reputation. But he goes in faith and prays for him and the Word says scales fell off Paul’s eyes and he could see again. Then he got baptized and ate.

1. Notice Paul can now see because the scales of religion and pride and arrogance have been removed. It tells us he spent time with the disciples and then began to preach about Jesus.

v. Galatians fills us in more on what happened to Paul after his conversion experience and about how Jesus transformed his life.

1. He makes it clear that he is not following a man made religion in his new preaching of Christ but that he received this message from Jesus himself in a divine ordained moment in his travel to persecute Christ’s followers.

2. He references his previous deceived way of life.

a. He made it clear that the message of God he had preached prior to his revelation led to bondage and sin and was not Good News but a belief filled with lies.

3. He notes that after his healing he went to Arabia for 3 years and then 14 years in Cilica and Syria to get his mind renewed with the truth. Remember this whole man’s intellectual up bringing and religious study had to be renewed because it was flawed.

a. He spent 15 days with Peter.

b. And he spent time with James the Lord’s brother

4. Paul’s conversion inspired the Body of Christ and even thwarted the persecution by the Jews. The man who had persecuted the body of Christ was now defending it and preaching its message of hope and restoration for all the people.

a. And the result of this dramatic conversion was the people praised God!

T.S. – Paul shares his testimony to convince the Galatia Christians that he knows what he is talking about that legalism and Judaism will not save them – works will not get them into Heaven only Jesus Christ will and the message he lived –preached and died for. So they must remember not to become people pleasers in their lives but be God pleasers.

III. Remember who called you and sent you to where you are today (Galatians 6:1, 10).

a. Don’t listen to even angels who contradict the Word of God Paul tells us.

i. Listen to the Words of Jesus first and foremost.

ii. The Devil can appear as an angel of light and deceive people into believing a false gospel.

b. Don’t let men force you to change your message.

i. If you do this then you become a people pleaser and you are no longer a servant of Jesus Christ.

1. Please Jesus not men!

c. Don’t make this awe full mistake to distort the Gospel to please men:

i. Costly Mistakes: A teenager worked as a florist’s delivery boy. One day he had two arrangements to deliver—one to a church for the dedication of a new building; the other to a funeral home. He got confused and took each to the wrong location. The florist received a call from an angry minister. “We’ve got a basket of flowers in the front of our new sanctuary that says, ‘Rest in Peace.”’ The florist replied, “You think you’ve got problems! Somewhere in this town there is a casket with flowers beside it that say, ‘Good luck in your new location.”’

ii. Some mistakes are more serious than others, but perverting the gospel is the biggest mistake of all.

1. This will not bring you praise in the eyes of the church of Jesus Christ or in the eyes of heaven.

Closing Illustration:

Illustrate the Parable of the Great Race and what happens if you start to run it. Use scenarios depicting the hardships and the battles that must be fought along the way.

Have tape on the floor were you start and were you finish.

The key lessons from Galatians Chapter 1 are as follows:

1. Do not allow the Evil one to deceive into believing another gospel of deception.

a. Resist him by renewing your mind and running the race with feverous determination.

i. You decide to finish strong and stay on course.

b. You do this by growing in your faith.

i. You make sure you have devotions with the Lord.

ii. You pray and read your Bible and stay plugged into the church God has called you to.

2. You review the testimonies in the Bible and listen to others storied of conversion and see the transformational power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

a. Share you testimony to others and watch it change their lives and open up their eyes so that they san see the truth.

3. Remember never become a people pleaser because when you do you no longer are a servant of Jesus Christ.

a. Please God follow his direction for you life and really learn what it means to live.
