Summary: A sermon on the three "I Shall Not Be Moved"s from Psalms. (Adapted from Alexander MacLaren’s Expositions of Holy Scripture)

Prayer Devotion for 11/5/2003

Shaken

- Sing chorus of I Shall Not Be Moved

- Kevin Lehman at the convention talked about how a woman has several versions of the word “Honey.”

- Said in different ways.

- Now if someone else was to say this to me like a waitress it would mean something different. If my mother was to say this to me it would be a term of endearment. If a stranger was to say this it would be weird. I had fun with someone at the office the other day.

- The Bible contains some phrases that if said by different people they mean something completely different from person to person.

- I will never be shaken; nothing will shake me.

1. Psalm 10:6 (Read vs. 3-11)

A. Obviously talking about the wicked.

B. This man says that he will never be shaken. How foolish!

C. Two problems in his beliefs:

1. Vs. 4- In all of his thoughts there is no room for God. Never thinks about God or worse yet thinks that there is no God.

2. Vs. 11- God has forgotten. He does not care what I do. He will not bring judgment.

D. He deliberately looks at others who have been shaken and who have suffered because of their sins and he gives it no thought or turns the other way.

E. It is absurd.

F. Do we think that we are renters or owners? We are all renters. It is the Lord’s stuff and it will not last forever.

G. There is no grave waiting for us. Is that so?

H. I think about 9/11 and how people came to God. Quickly go back to vs. 4 and 11.

2. Psalm 30:6 (Read vs. 4-8)

A. When I felt secure, in NKJV- in my prosperity.

B. Not really safe, but safe for so long that we forget where our safety comes from.

C. We forget how fragile life is. We forget that enemies surround us spiritually and physically. This is what happened to our nation.

D. Our security is not in our prosperity, it is in the Lord.

E. We do not know what will happen tomorrow. I am thankful for 9/11. How quickly we forget even as Christian people.

F. Have no changes and they begin to not fear God.

G. (2 Pet 3:4 NIV) They will say, "Where is this ’coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation."

G. Not deliberately wicked but we forget.

3. Psalm 16:8 (Read vs. 7-9)

A. This is the confidence of a simple faith.

B. The man who takes hold of God’s hand will never be shaken. He is our Friend, our Guide, and Our Rock.

C. This man does not fear change because he has something in his life that does not change.

D. A missionary’s wife was standing next to a new Christian. The missionary wife became faint and she feared that she would pass out and fall. When told, the new Christian said to lean upon her for support. She said, “If you love me, lean hard.” God says, “If you love Me, lean hard.”

E. It is not arrogance, it is not forgetfulness; it is simply confidence in God.

F. If we lean upon Christ, we will be able to avoid the second man’s problem. Outward things may come and go, but Christ abides forever.

G. (Psa 73:26 NIV) My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

- Each one means something different. Same words but different meaning.

- One is of the arrogant man.

- One if of the forgetful man.

- The last is one of simple faith.
