What Shall We Then Say?
Romans 8:31-39
Reading: Psalm 27:1-6
Intro: Romans 8:1
-In the previous 7 chapters of Romans, Paul has spent a great deal of time talking about our sin.
-How all have sinned. Roman 3:23
-How man worshipped the creation rather then the creator.
-How the law does not save us from sin but reveals our sin.
-He also talks about how God has provided salvation.
Romans 5:1-8
-He talks about his own struggle with sin. Vs. 7:15-25
-Vs 8:1
-He then talks about the work of the Holy Spirit in
Salvation and it’s process.
-Romans 8:28-30
-Paul then asks five questions.
I. If God be for us, who can be against us?
A. The word "if" is not a question of doubt, but certainty
B. God is for you.
-He is there cheering you on.
-He loves you the most
-Like a parent at a football game.
-He wants you to be saved
-He wants the best for you.
He says in Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) “For I know the plans I
have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper
you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope
and a future.”
B.If God is for us…who can be against us?
-No enemy can arise against us.
-No foe can defeat us.
-Death has no sting
-Sin has no power
-The devil is defeated.
-…We are more than conquerors through him that loved us. Vs 37
C. If God is for us, there no power, no principality, no authority, no person, no devil, that can come against us.
II. Who can keep God from giving us all things? Vs. 32
A. God gave us the greatest gift that he had.
-There was no greater gift.
-All the rest are little things to God.
-Matthew 7:7-11
-James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of
God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth
not; and it shall be given him.
-James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Psalms 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
B.God wants to bless you.
C.He wants good things for you.
D.He has already given His best for you.
Psalms 34:10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
Psalms 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
God will freely give us all things.
III. Who shall lay anything to the charge or God’s elect. Vs 33
A. The question is this: If we have been justified by God’s grace (through faith) who can stand and charge us with anything.
-The charge that was before us was “GUILTY”
-The word “justified” means that we have been declared by God, “NOT GUITLY”
B. The charges have been paid for.
-Hebrews 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I
remember no more.
-The charges were not dropped, they were paid for by
the blood of Christ on Calvary.
C. We are now justified by the blood of Christ.
D. Satin is our great accuser…God just keeps telling
him…what sin? I don’t remember?
-Romans 5:1-2
IV. Who is he that condemneth? Vs 34
A. There is no condemnation. (Romans 8:1)
B. When the price was paid the penalty was removed.
-We have been set free by the blood of Christ.
-Under sin we were condemned.
-Under the blood we have been pardoned.
C. Some may try to condemn us…the world, Satin, but listen to this…
- John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
V. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Vs 25
-Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
A. Look at Paul’s list. Vs. 38-39
B. There is nothing that can separate you from the love of Christ.
C. He loved you so much and demonstrated by giving His life for you.
-How could you reject such love?
