A Spiritual “Let Us” Sandwich
Hebrews 10:19-25.
Are we hungry this morning?
Matt. 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”
I would like to give you this morning a Spiritual “Let Us” sandwich. I know that a lettuce sandwich doesn’t stick to the ribs like steak and gravy, but every Christian needs a Spiritual “ Let Us ” sandwich. Then we can spiritually grow in the Grace and the Knowledge of the Truth, and receive strength in the Lord.
Begin text here.
Hebrews 10:19, “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,” Praise God, it should stir our hearts this morning. That you and I can enter into the holiest of holy, into the very presence of Almighty God. That you and I have the right of access into the place that only the blood can enter. That you and I have the new title of Son ship, having been changed by the covering of the blood of Christ, changed from a Sinner to a Saint, changed by our faith in the finished work of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I ask you to consider this morning, the difference between the “Holiest of Holy” in the Old Testament and New Testament. In the Old Testament, to enter within the veil meant sudden death, because the veil or the “Holiest of Holy” was a place to be entered into only by the high priest and only once a year. In the New Testament we read when Jesus was resurrected, that the veil of the temple was rent from the top to the bottom, because Christ had removed the wall of partition or the wall of separation between God and man, and thereby giving access unto all who would come and enter into the presence of God.
Hebrews 10:20, “By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;” In the Old Testament, the sacrifices were of animals, such as goats, doves, sheep or Lambs which were to be spotless and without blemish, and so on. These sacrifices were only temporary, and were pointing to the “New and Living Way.” Notice the difference here between the “Old” and the “New”. The “Old” way was only a temporary satisfaction for the individual, because of the consciousness of their sin or sins remaining after the sacrifice. (Heb. 10:1-4) The “Old” way ended in the death of the sacrifice, the keyword here is ended. And from year to year the sacrifice had to be made for the same sin or sins. But the “New and Living Way” is through the eternal sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus having offered himself once for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.
(Heb. 10:10-18) Jesus is the “New and Living Way,” he is not dead! He is ever to make intercession for you and I. Jesus said in (John. 14:6), “ I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the father but by me.” There are no back doors, no side doors, and no detours or no other way to get to heaven.
Hebrews 10:21, “And having an high priest over the house of God.” Jesus is not just another high priest, He is a Mighty, Distinguished, Exalted, Eminent, and Outstanding Priest over the house of God. What need have we for earthly priest when we have so mighty Priest as Christ, seated within the veil, on the throne of grace, to act in our behalf? Believers are the house of God—Paul says in (Eph.2: 19), “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God.”
Hebrews 10:22, “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”
“LET US” DRAW NEAR
Many Christians fail to draw near to God in prayer. They don’t take time to have as close a relationship with God as they could have. They are too involved in temporal things. They are selfish in concern of their own wants or their own things; the things of the flesh rather than the things of God. They neglect the fellowship of intimacy with the Lord Jesus Christ. They fail in their meditation of God’s word; the very source of higher learning, higher attainment to the will of God. (Matt. 24:35), “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away.” God’s promises hold us steady in an unsteady world. (Matt. 11:28), “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
(ISA. 1:18), ”Come now and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”
Hebrews 10:23, “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised.)
“Let us” hold fast
Many Christians fail to keep the faith. They sometimes give up when things don’t go their way or the way they think it should go. And when they are wrong, they lose their self-confidence and begin to doubt themselves and in the process they disappoint and discourage others.
God too is disappointed and displeased when Christians are undependable, unstable, and yes, unfaithful. He wants us to be “rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith…” (Col. 2:7).
(Heb. 11:1), “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is the substance that will hold our lives together and keep us from falling apart when the pressure is on.
Hebrews 10: 24, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto Love and to good works.”
“Let Us” consider one another
To consider one another, this consists of many different things, such as: Love, Prayer, Concern, Needs, and so on.
Let’s look at these individually beginning with Love.
Love
Jesus said in (John 13:34), “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye Love one another even as I have Loved you, that ye also Love one another.” Many Christians don’t Love others as they are supposed to do. They are caught up in things of their own life, their families, and their close-knit area of friends. This type of Christian is incomplete and unfulfilled, and miss out on the kind of Christian relationship that we can have with one another and with God. And not just to Love one another, but to Love everybody, with the Love of Christ, which dwelleth in us. We must reach out in Love, helping others who are on their way to a devils hell.
Prayer
James said in (James 5:16), “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteousness man availeth much.” What James is telling us here is that we should be praying for one another, and at all times. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God everyday. We all have needs and we all need the touch of the master’s hand—everyday. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteousness man availeth much.” This is not casual prayer, with little aim or purpose, but the earnest supplication of a godly man for a definite and special need.
Concern
Paul said in (Romans. 12: 9-16), “Let Love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly Love; in honour preferring one another. Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them, which curse you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” (Gal. 6:2), “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” We are to be concerned about every element in a Christian’s life!
Needs
This area consists of all of the above. If we Love one another, and pray for one another, and if we are concerned about one another, then the “Needs” will be met. Whether they are physical or spiritual. On this we have God’s word on it. All we have to do is believe God. (Heb. 11:6), “ But without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them which diligently seek him. “
The Spiritual “Let Us” Sandwich must consist of these three elements of the Christian life. “Let Us draw near, Let Us hold fast, Let us consider one another. But these would be incomplete without Love. For God is Love, and without his Love, where would you and I be. (I Cor.13: 13) says, “And now abideth faith, hope, and charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
Hebrews 10:25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” As we have seen the instructions for us in the Spiritual “Let Us” Sandwich, the holy spirit confirms us to our responsibility, and much the more, as we see the day approaching. Throughout all of Paul’s epistles, he exhorts and warns the world of Christ’s coming.
Today I ask you, how close of a relationship do you have with God? Are you willing to be what God wants you to be? Are you striving to do his will? Are you the witness that he wants and needs? Or do you have the “spare tire” religion? You know, you only use God when you can’t do it yourself. You can move up a little closer right now, if you will just take him at his word. God wants to bless you, use you as the witness of his Love and mercy, for lost souls to be saved, and for his honor and his glory. Remember what (I Cor. 13:13) says, “faith, hope, and charity. But the greatest of these three is charity (or Love).”
