INTRODUCTION
A. Key question: How can sinful humans worship a holy
God?
1. The answer for the Jew was found in this
book - Levitcus
2. In Genesis, we see humanity ruined by the fall
3. In Exodus we see God’s chosen people redeemed
from bondage
4. In Leviticus, God’s people are revived through
worship.
B. Like no Old Testament Book, Leviticus is filled
with pictures of the Christ
1. Without exception, every offering and feast
provides another vivid portrait of Jesus.
God’s sacrificial lamb who takes away the sin
of world - Jn.1:29
2. In the first five chapters, there are 5
different offerings presented
3. Each one portrays Jesus Christ from a
different perspective.
I. THE BURNT OFFERING - Lev.1
A. This offering was laid on the altar and was
completely consumed in fire and smoke 1:1-9
B. The Burnt offering pictures Jesus Christ offering
Himself to His Father in complete obedience and
surrender.
1. We see the Savior’s dedication, devotion and
desire to please the Father
2. Laying down his life voluntarily - Jn.10:17-18 C. This offering reminds us of who we are!
1. Priests offering ourselves as living sacrifices
I Pet.2:5-9; Rom.12:1-2
2. Are we willing to put our all on the altar for
the Lord - time, talents and treasure? When
we do the Lord will be well pleased 1:13
II. THE GRAIN OFFERING - Lev.2
A. Offering of grain or cereals made of fine flour
1. The grain was grown by the people.
2. It was ground up into fine flour by the
people - the work of their own hands. They
were offering the fruit if their labors to the
Lord.
B. So it is with Jesus Christ - John 9:4
1. He performed all of His works for the Father’s
glory and pleasure
2. As he approached the cross, he presented his
ultimate, final and eternal grain offering.
3. He offered up His life as a fine flour, and it
was perfectly accepted,never to be offered
again.
C. Today we must come to Christ with our very best,
not leftovers
1. On this side of the cross we must realize that
all we have comes from Him, and we owe Him our
thanks, lives and all we have.
2. Heb.11:4 - Abel offered a more excellent
sacrifice. So must we!
3. Are we really giving God our best and offering
Him acceptable sacrifices? Rom.12:1-2
III. THE PEACE OFFERING - Lev.3
A. This is also known as the Peace Offering
1. Part of the sacrifice was laid on the altar,
part to the priests and the remainder was
eaten by the worshipper.
2. This sacrifice spoke of fellowship, friendship
and joint participation
B. Jesus Christ is our Peace or Fellowship Offering
1. He made peace through the blood of the Cross -
Eph.2:14-17
2. And through Him we have fellowship and
communion with God
3. There is peace with God through our LJC -
Rom.5:1-2
4. On that basis we can have sweet fellowship
together - I John 1:7
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another,and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin”
IV. THE SIN OFFERING - Lev.4
A. This was not a voluntary offering like the other
three.
1. This offering was required by all - priests,
rulers, congregation -everyone!
2. It made atonement for sins committed through
ignorance, or unintentional sins.
B. The Sin offering reminds us that we all need a
Savior
1. Jesus is the final sin offering for the whole
world - I Jn.2:2
2. Father forgive them was the cry from the
cross - Lk.23:34
3. Pentecost is proof of this - Acts 2:36-38; II
Cor.5:21; I Pet.2:24
V. THE GUILT OFFERING - Lev.5
A. This applied in cases where sins were committed
unintentionally, and where restitution is possible.
1. Making things right when wrong has been done.
2. Zacchaeus knew this was important - Lk.19:8-10
3. This was the teaching of the OT Law - Lev.6:5;
Ex.22:3-6,12
B. Jesus Christ is our Guilt or Trespass offering
1. He paid our debt of sin - Eph.2:1 while dead
in trespasses & sins
2. All sins were taken away, as we contact the
blood Matt.26:28
3. Only Christ could do that - Heb.10:4 - not
bulls or goats.
CONCLUSION
A. In all of these sacrifices we have seen the
seriousness of sin
1. There is the reality of sin, and then there is
the remission of sin.
2. Here is the Way to God through these
offerings, leading to a walk with God each
day, not just a few hours a week.
B. What does God want from each of us today - more
things, money? NO!
1. A definite, daily and deliberate surrender of
your life to Him.
2. There is a way open to God today - not through
H.Priest or animal sacrifices,but through our
H.Priest (Jesus) who became sacrifice for our
sins Heb.10:19-21
3. What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the
blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus. HAVE YOU BEEN
WASHED IN THAT BLOOD? Rev.1:5; Acts 22:16
