WHEN THE MAN COMES AROUND
Revelation 1:9–20
(Get a glimpse of Jesus)
INTRODUCTION:
In the newest Superman film directed by James Gunn, there’s a defining moment when the world stops seeing Clark Kent as just an ordinary man… and finally realizes who he really is.
The disguise is no longer the focus.?The identity is undeniable.
And when that happens:
The tone shifts
The atmosphere changes
And no one sees him the same way again
Revelation 1 is that moment—but infinitely greater.
John is not discovering Jesus for the first time… He’s seeing Him as He truly is.
John had already seen glimpses:
On the Mount of Transfiguration
After the resurrection
At the ascension
But now… there is no veil. No restraint. No humanity concealing His glory.
This is Jesus—fully revealed.
And here’s the truth that drives everything:
When you truly see Jesus, you cannot remain the same.
Before John tells us what he saw… he tells us where he was.?Because sometimes the place of revelation makes the revelation even more powerful.
HE FINDS US WHERE WE ARE - Revelation 1:9–11
John is on Patmos—exiled for the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
He is isolated.
He is forgotten.
He is suffering.
But he is not defeated.
I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day…” (Revelation 1:10, NASB 1995)
And in that moment… he hears a voice like a trumpet—clear, commanding, unmistakable.
Everything changes.
John is not in a temple.?He is not in a revival meeting.?He is not surrounded by believers.
He is alone.
And yet Jesus meets him there.
This is the Jesus who:
Walks into locked rooms
Stands on stormy seas
Finds Hagar in the wilderness
Meets Daniel in the lions’ den
Sits with Paul in prison
Now encounters John while in exile.
His isolation became his revelation.
His suffering became his sanctuary.
Because when the Man comes around, He doesn’t wait for perfect conditions—He meets you in real ones.
HE SHOWS US WHO HE REALLY IS - Revelation 1:12–18
John turns… and sees Jesus.
But not as he remembers Him.
This is the risen, reigning, glorified Christ.
Hair white like wool
Eyes like fire
Feet like bronze
Voice like many waters
Face shining like the sun
This is not the Jesus of imagination or culture.
This is the eternal Son of God.
This is the risen, reigning, glorified Christ.
And when John sees Him he wrote: “When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.” (Revelation 1:17, NASB 1995)
You don’t negotiate.
You don’t analyze.
You don’t pretend.
You fall.
But don’t miss this:
The same Jesus whose glory brings John to the ground…?is the same Jesus who reaches down and lifts him up.
He lays His right hand on him and says: “Do not be afraid…” (Revelation 1:17, NASB 1995)
When the Man comes around, the disguise is gone—and the glory is revealed.
HE CALLS US TO RESPOND - Revelation 1:19–20
John falls in worship; And then Jesus speaks;“Write therefore the things which you have seen…” (Revelation 1:19, NASB 1995)
Jesus didn’t say:
Keep it to yourself
Process it privately
Stay silent
He said:
Write it.
Declare it.
Send it.
A real encounter with Jesus always results in a real response to Jesus.
John is given:
A new posture—worship
A new courage—fear not
A new mission—write and proclaim
A new authority—My hand is on you
A new urgency—the churches need this
A real encounter with Jesus always results in a public witness for Jesus.
You cannot see Jesus clearly… and stay the same.
CLOSING:
In that Superman moment, when Clark steps forward and reveals who he really is… everything changes.
The tone shifts. The atmosphere changes. People respond.
No one stays casual, No one stays distracted, No one stays the same.
Because revelation demands a response.
John knew that.
He saw Jesus on the mountain… and now he sees Him in glory on Patmos. And again… he falls.
Because when Jesus is revealed—neutrality is impossible.
If you can see Jesus like this… and walk out unchanged… you didn’t really see Him.
INVITATION:
Church, John’s vision didn’t leave him the same— and it shouldn’t leave us the same either.
Some of us have been living with a small, safe, manageable version of Jesus.
But today… the veil is gone.
If You’ve seen Him as He truly is:
The First and the Last
The Living One
The One whose face shines like the sun
The One who holds the keys of death and hell
And the only right response is surrender.
SALVATION:
It is not about religion, church attendance, or trying harder But repentance and faith in the risen Christ…
The Jesus John saw is alive:
He died for you.
He rose for you.
And He calls you today.
Come to Him. Run to Him. He is alive forevermore—and He can make you alive today.
REDEDICATION:
And for the believer who has drifted, grown casual, and has lost the awe…
This is your moment.
Fall again at His feet.
Say to Him, “Lord, restore my vision. Revive my worship. Reclaim my heart.”
FINAL WORD
Ever how He is speaking to you today - Don’t walk out the same way you walked in. Don’t ignore the glory of the King. Don’t resist the One whose eyes are like fire.
When the Man comes around—everything changes.
The only question is… will you?
