Can any of the things that we idolize in this world guarantee us life forever? Let’s look at Psalm 115.
Do we flatter ourselves, praise our nations, hail our accomplishments, and forget to give glory to God?
Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to Your name give glory because of Your faithful love, because of Your truth. Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in heaven and does whatever He pleases. (Ps 115:1-3 HCSB)
Do we worship the things made with human hands, materialism and technology that cannot give us eternal life?
Their idols are silver and gold, crafted by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak; they have eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear; they have noses, but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot touch; feet, but cannot walk; they cannot even groan with their throats. Those who craft them will become like them, as will all those who trust in them. (Ps 115:4-8 ISV)
Do we trust fallible human leaders, science, and medicine more than our only real hope of eternal life, the Lord?
O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord: he is their help and their shield. Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord: he is their help and their shield. (Ps 115:9-11 KJV)
From whom do permanent, eternal blessings come, humanity or Yahweh, the Lord?
Yahweh remembered us; He will bless! He will bless the house of Israel. He will bless the house of Aaron. He will bless those who fear Yahweh, The small together with the great. May Yahweh give you increase, You and your children. May you be blessed of Yahweh, Who made heaven and earth. (Ps 115:12-15 LSB)
If the dead cannot praise the Lord, who will bless the Lord forever?
The heavens are the heavens of the Lord, But the earth He has given to the sons of mankind. The dead do not praise the Lord, Nor do any who go down into silence; But as for us, we will bless the Lord From this time and forever. Praise the Lord! (Ps 115:16-18 NASB)
Is anything that we could design anywhere close to the majesty of God?
Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. (Acts 17:29 NIV)
