Summary: There is a growing spirit of offense and resentment with the family and the church. Hurt, anger and unforgiveness can be a hidden danger in our hearts. Unforgiveness hinders ministers, leaders and layity. We must not accept resentment in the dark rooms of our hearts.

*BREWING RESENTMENT. THROWING STONES. TUNNEL VISION.

TEXT: THOU SHALL NOT STEAL --- REFUSE TO TAKE WHAT IS NOT YOURS. There is HIDDEN danger to your family.

Romans 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

BREW: a state of anxiety or agitation, slowly simmer, cook, soak, boil, fermentation, make stronger.

ANGER, BITTERNESS AND RESENTMENT BREW… GROWS STRONGER AND STRONGER… KILL ANGER AND RESENTMENT OR IT WILL KILL YOU.

Hebrews 12:12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. 14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

There will be thriving in the last days several attitudes or spiritual traits. One of these traits will be an attitude or spirit that takes people from bad to worse. Resentment, anger and bitterness will brew stronger and stronger. People right in the family and the church will be at each other’s throats hating each other. The spirit of hatred will hinder the move of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

THIS LAST DAY SPIRIT OF OFFENSE, ANGER, AND BITTERNESS CAN BE BREWED TO THE TERRIBLE LEVEL OF RESENTMENT. NOTHING CREATES MORE DEEP SEATED ANXIETIES THAN THE FALSE ASSUMPTION THAT LIFE SHOULD BE FREE FROM ANXIETIES.

Train your mind to practice JOY. Joy is not an automatic emotion that jumps in your heart. JOY does not simply happen to you. You must make the choice and choose JOY. Then daily you have to practice the art of choosing JOY every day. You train your kidneys. You train your mouth to talk. WHY NOT TRAIN YOUR JOY PATTERNS? We must bury the feelings of anger, bitterness and resentment. GOD DESIGNED US TO FORGIVE.

John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

John 15:11 (MSG) "I've told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature.

12 This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you.

.John 15:11 These things and your joy wholly mature. have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

BITTERNESS, ANGER AND RESENTMENT ARE COMPLEX EMOTIONS THAT BREW OR GROW… RESENTMENT IS BIRTHED IN IMMATURITY. With resentment we often wallow in feelings of anger. AT FIRST, RESENTMENT IS USUALLY A WEAK PASSIVE FEELING OF BITTERNESS DUE TO INSULT OR HURT. RESENTMENT IS A FORM OF ANGER. Resentment comes as a feeling resulting from unfair treatment or a misunderstanding. Resentment hinders the work of the Holy Spirit.

RESENTTMENT CAUSES TOTAL BLINDNESS AND TUNNEL VISION. RESENTMENT CAN TAKE ROOT IN OUR HEARTS. RESENTMENT DOES NOT JUST HAPPEN WITH ONE EVENT. RESENTMENT IS NORMALLY A BUILD UP OF SEVERAL EVENTS. RESENTMENT IS ALMOST ALWAYS HOLDING ON TO HARM FROM THE PAST OF PAINFUL EXPERIENCES. THEN WE HOLD ON TO THAT PAIN DAY AFTER DAY, RESENTMENT BREWS. SOME MAY CALL IT HOLY RESENTMENT --- THERE IS NOTHING HOLY OR GODLY ABOUT RESENTMENT. WHERE DOES RESENTMENT FIRST APPEAR IN THE HISTORY OF MAN KIND? IN THE FIRST FAMILY RESENTMENT BREWS.

THERE ARE SEVERAL DANGEROUS COUSINS THAT WILL KILL LOVE AND PEACE IN THE FAMILY. THEY ARE ANGER, BITTERNNESS AND RESENTMENT. Life has a tendency that we carry to get hurt, offended and to grow resentment.

The first family found that CAIN RESENTED ABEL OVER AN OFFERING… Cain was bitter toward his brother. This bitterness led to a total resentment and anger that brewed. AM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER?

Genesis 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

DON’T BREW! ONE PERSON ALLOWS THE NEGATIVE THINGS IN LIFE TO MAKE THEM BITTER, ANOTHER PERSON ALLOWS THE SAME SITUATION TO MAKE THEM BETTER. HOW ABOUT JOB’S FAMILY?

Many things happened that are personally crushing to Job’s family. They spent time in the funeral home. They lost all hope. Chronic sickness can cause anger, bitterness and resentment. Look what happens in the same home. One gives up in bitterness. Look at her words.

Job 2:9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

JOB HAS A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE TO THE FAMILY PROBLEMS. Job never allowed bitterness, anger and resentment to brew in his heart. Job falls to his knees and worships.

Job 1:20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. 22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

By refusing to allow resentment to brew JOB OPENS THE DOORS FOR RESTORATION. We must keep a pure forgiving heart. Never give ground to resentment.

Job 42:10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

LABAN HAS TWO DAUGHTERS. ONE WEAK EYED AND THE OTHER WAS BEAUTIFUL. LET’S LOOK AT FAMILY RESENTMENT AND BITTERNESS THAT FESTERED MORE AND MORE. LEAH AND RACHEL ALLOWED RESENTMENT TO BREW. JACOB IS DECEIVED, HE WORKS 7 YEARS FOR RACHEL. HE ENDS UP MARRIED TO LEAH.

This marriage will brew a contest and bitterness that will lead to great resentment. Those two wives give Jacob two more wives. These 4 wives and 13 children brew a mess. Not only is the 4 women but there is strife between the children. THE BROTERS BREW RESENTMENT THAT BEGINS IN A WELL, SLAVERY AND LIES. ---RESENTMENT BREEDS HURT. Many years later at a table in Egypt FORGIVENESS comes.

COME TO A DIFFERENT DAY, THERE ARE SOME DYSFUNTIONAL ISSUES BREWING. ONE PRAYING MOTHER REFUSES RESENTMENT AND GOES TO CHURCH AND IN PRAYER HANNAH BURIES HER FAMILY RESENTMENT.

PENINNAH (puh-NIN-uh) WAS VERY MEAN and cruel to Hannah. Peninnah’s children mocked Hannah. Hannah had a rival. Her rival was mean and mocked Hannah. Their family was dysfunctional. HANNAH REFUSED TO LET ANGER, BITTERNESS AND RESENTMENT RULE HER SPIRIT. Hannah knew how to pray and let go. Hannah trusted God as she prayed.

1 Samuel 1:10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.

1 Samuel 1:12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

WHILE HANNAH PRAYED SHE SAW LITTLE RESULTS. As a matter of fact Hannah went home the same way she came. By refusing to be RESENTFUL Hannah trusted the Preacher’s words and God honored her lack of anger with a son.

1 Samuel 1:18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad. 19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

The Lord remembered Hannah’s forgiveness and love. God honored her with a son named SAMUEL. Samuel became a great man of God. Hannah never passed hatred and resentment to her son. SAMUEL WILL ANOINT THE FIRST TWO KINGS (SAUL, DAVID) of Israel. It really pays to let go of the pain, disappointments and mistreatments of others and LET GOD FIGHT THE BATTLES.

WHY THROW STONES? SHIMEI! WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND NOT JUST WHAT IS SAID, BUT WHO SAID IT? AND WHY DID THEY SAY IT? LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO A CHARACTER IN THE BIBLE THAT BEST ILLUSTRATES RESENTMENT. THERE IS A MAN IN THE BOOK OF 2 SAMUEL THAT IS CONSUMED WITH HATRED, ANGER AND RESENTMENT. LET US STUDY A MAN FULL OF JEALOUSY, ANGER AND RESENTMENT, HIS NAME IS SHIMEI. HE IS ABSOLUTELY FULL OF DISAPPOINTMENT, BITTERNESS, ANGER AND RESENTMENT…

WHY IS SHIMEI SO RESENTFUL? LET US LOOK AT A MAN WITH SELFISH MOTIVES. HE WAS SAUL’S FAMILY. WHEN SAUL AND HIS SONS DIED, SHIMEI WAS THE SELF-APPOINTED NEW KING. HE KNEW HE SHOULD TAKE THE THRONE AND BE THE NEXT KING OF ISRAEL. Shimei was full of resentment for David. Shimei ran along the river and THREW STONES AT DAVID. Shimei was so busy cursing and throwing stones and calling David names. Shimei had tunnel vision, he could not see clearly passs his own nose. Bitterness distorts God’s call.

2 Samuel 16:5 And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed still as he came. 6 And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. 7 And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial: 8 The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a bloody man.

DAVID REFUSES TO STOOP TO REVENGE AND RESENTMENT… DAVID REFUSES TO ALLOW HIS MEN TO RETALIATE OR EVEN TELL SHIMEI OFF.

2 Samuel 16:12 It may be that the LORD will look on mine affliction, and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day.

SHIMEI just kept himself in the DISTORTION OF RESENTMENT. He was selfish, immature and unforgiving.

2 Samuel 16:13 And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust.

SHIMEI’S BITTERNESS, ANGER AND RESENTMENT WERE VERY COMPLEX EMOTIONS THAT DISTORTED GOD’S PLANS. THE ANGRIER SHIMEI BREWED GREW DEEPER AND DEEPER ROOTS… RESENTMENT IS BIRTHED IN IMMATURITY. With resentment we often wallow in our feelings of anger, bitterness. RESENTMENT IS USUALLY A WEAK PASSIVE FEELING OF BITTERNESS DUE TO INSULT OR HURT. RESENTMENT IS A FORM OF ANGER. Resentment comes as result of unfair treatment or a misunderstanding. Resentment hinders the work of the Holy Spirit.

DAVID ON HIS DEATH BED WARNS HIS SON SOLOMON OF THE RESENTFULNESS OF SHIMEI. WATCH HIM SON. SHIMEI’S ATTITUDES OF RESENTMENT CAN HURT YOU. SHIMEI WAS WARNED. SHEIMI AGREED TO THE LIMITS AND HE DISRESPECTED THE AGREEMENT AND IT COST HIS LIFE. RESENTMENT COST. RESENTMENT BACKFIRES!

1 Kings 2:37 For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.

1 Kings 2:38 And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days. 39 And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath.

1 Kings 2:44 The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head; 45 And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever. 46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

CONCLUSION: RESENTTMENT CAUSES TOTAL BLINDNESS AND TUNNEL VISION. RESENTMENT CAN TAKE ROOT IN OUR HEARTS. RESENTMENT DOES NOT JUST HAPPEN WITH ONE EVENT. RESENTMENT IS NORMALLY A BUILD UP OF SEVERAL EVENTS. RESENTMENT ALWAYS HOLDS ON TO HARM FROM THE PAST OF PAINFUL EXPERIENCES. THEN WE HOLD ON TO THAT PAIN DAY AFTER DAY.

***WOLFING DOWN THE PAIN

By F. Buechner

OF THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS RESENTMENT AND ANGER ARE POSSIBLY THE MOST FUN.

TO LICK YOUR WOUNDS, TO SMACK YOUR LIPS OVER GRIEVANCES LONG PAST,

TO ROLL OVER YOUR TONGUE THE PROSPECT OF BITTER CONFRONTATION STILL TO COME.

TO SAVOR TO THE LAST TOOTHSOME MORSEL THE PAIN YOU ARE GIVEN

AND THE PAIN YOU ARE GIVING BACK.

IN MANY WAYS IT IS A FEAST FIT FOR A KING.

THE CHIEF DRAW BACK IS THAT WHAT YOU ARE WOLFING DOWN IS YOURSELF.

THE SKELETON AT THE FEAST IS YOU.
