Go! And Trust the God Who Guards You - Psalm 121:5 (NLT)
Psalm 121:5 (NLT): “The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.”
INTRODUCTION — WHEN YOU FEEL UNPROTECTED
Have you ever stood somewhere and suddenly felt exposed?
Perhaps walking down a dark street.
Sitting in a hospital waiting room.
Facing a bill you can’t pay.
Hearing a diagnosis you didn’t want.
Watching your child walk away from the Lord.
Or lying awake at night, wondering, Who is watching over me?
Psalm 121 was written for moments just like that.
It was a Psalm for travellers—for pilgrims walking dangerous mountain roads filled with steep ravines, lurking animals, unpredictable weather, and violent thieves. Yet it is also a Psalm for modern pilgrims like you and me who walk through the dangers, uncertainties, and temptations of the 21st century.
And right at the centre of this Psalm stands a glorious promise:
“The Lord himself watches over you!” (Psalm 121:5)
Not an angel.
Not a force.
Not fate.
Not luck.
The Lord HIMSELF—the covenant-keeping God—watches over you.
Today’s message in the “Go! And…” series is titled:
Go! And Trust the God Who Guards You
Because faith is not passive.
Faith is not theoretical.
Faith walks.
Faith moves.
Faith trusts.
And faith lives under the protective shadow of the Almighty.
Let’s walk through Psalm 121:5, and then allow Scripture to interpret Scripture as we see how God guards, keeps, preserves, and watches over His people.
1. THE LORD HIMSELF WATCHES OVER YOU
Psalm 121:5 (NLT): “The Lord himself watches over you!The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.”
The Hebrew phrase “watches over you” uses the verb ?????? — shamar
Meaning: to guard, keep, protect, preserve like a watchman on a city wall.
Shamar is used six times in this Psalm—God wants us to know He doesn’t watch us casually; He watches like the Guardian of the covenant, the Keeper of Israel.
The phrase “your protective shade” uses ??? — tsel
Meaning: shade, shadow, shelter from danger, protection from enemies, covering from heat.
It pictures a mother bird spreading her wings,
or a mighty tree shielding a weary traveller,
or a warrior standing between danger and the one he protects.
This is deeply personal protection.
God is NOT distant.
He is NOT distracted.
He is NOT indifferent.
He stands beside His people as their keeper, defender, shade, guardian, protector, preserver, and shield.
Psalm 91:1–4 (NLT):
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty…
He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.”
The Hebrew word “shadow” is again tsel.
The same promise.
The same God.
The same protection.
John Piper once said: “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them.”
Yes! We often see so little, but God is working endlessly behind the scenes—guarding, guiding, protecting, sustaining, preserving.
You may feel vulnerable.
You may feel alone.
You may feel under attack.
But Psalm 121 says:
God is standing beside you right now.
Not metaphorically.
Not symbolically.
But covenantally, faithfully, eternally.
2. THE LORD IS YOUR KEEPER IN EVERY SEASON
(SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE #2 — Isaiah 43:1–3)
Isaiah 43:1–3 (NLT):
“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.
I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.”
Israel is facing exile, judgment, and despair.
Yet God reminds them of His ownership and His protection.
“Ransomed” (Hebrew: ga’al)
Means: to redeem, rescue, buy back, deliver from danger by paying a price.
This word points straight to Jesus.
God does not promise you a life without storms.
He promises He will walk with you through them.
He does not promise no battles.
He promises His presence in the battle.
He does not promise no trials.
He promises He will sustain you during the trials.
The Shepherd and the Blind Lamb
A shepherd once noticed a blind lamb constantly wandering towards a cliff edge.
He didn’t shout at it from a distance.
He didn’t send another sheep to guide it.
He walked beside it, touching it gently with his staff every few steps.
That lamb survived not because it saw the shepherd…
but because the shepherd saw the lamb.
This is Psalm 121.
3. THE LORD IS YOUR PROTECTOR FROM ALL EVIL
2 Thessalonians 3:3 (NLT): “But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.”
“Guard you” in Greek is f????e? — phylaxei
Meaning: to guard like a fortress soldier, to stand watch, to keep danger away.
Who is He guarding you from?
The evil one—Satan.
God guards you spiritually
He guards your mind.
He guards your soul.
He guards your salvation.
He guards your destiny.
Charles Stanley wrote: “God assumes full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him.”
Amen. When God guards you, nothing—absolutely nothing—can take you out of His hands.
4. THE LORD IS YOUR PROTECTOR FOREVER
(SUPPORTING SCRIPTURE #4 — John 10:27–30)
John 10:27–30 (NLT): “My sheep listen to my voice… I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me…”
Jesus is the ultimate Keeper
He is not simply a shepherd.
He is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep.
Eternal Security Is Personal Protection
“Never perish” — the Greek ?? µ? ?p????ta?
A double negative meaning:
“It is impossible for them to ever perish.”
This is divine security.
Not our grip on God,
but God’s grip on us.
The Child Crossing the Road
A little girl once grabbed her father's finger to cross the road.
Halfway across, a car raced by and she let go in fear.
But her father never let go of her.
Your salvation is the same.
You may lose your grip on God…
but God will never lose His grip on you.
THE GOSPEL PRESENTATION — THE GOD WHO GUARDED YOU AT THE CROSS
If Psalm 121 reveals God as the One who guards you,
then the Gospel reveals how far He went to guard you eternally.
Jesus Christ, the Son of God:
• Left heaven to come to earth.
• Wrapped Himself in flesh.
• Lived the sinless life you could never live.
• Went to the cross—not accidentally, but intentionally.
• Took your sin, shame, and judgment.
• Shed His blood to redeem you.
• Died and was buried.
• Rose again on the third day.
• Defeated sin, death, and Satan.
• Offers forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life to all who repent and believe.
At the cross, the Good Shepherd stood between you and the wrath of God.
He shielded you from eternal danger.
He became your shade.
He became your guardian.
He became your salvation.
Psalm 121 shows how God guards us in life.
The Gospel shows how God guards us for eternity.
CALL TO ACTION — GO! AND TRUST THE GOD WHO GUARDS YOU
So what does Psalm 121:5 call you to do?
1. Go! And trust God with your fears.
Lay them at His feet.
2. Go! And trust God with your future.
He stands beside you.
3. Go! And trust God with your salvation.
Jesus has done the work.
4. Go! And walk in obedience.
Protected people live protected lives.
5. Go! And rest under His shade.
Because the One who watches over Israel…
watches over you.
INVITATION TO SALVATION:
If you have never given your life to Jesus…
If you’ve never confessed your sin, repented, and placed your faith in Him as Saviour and Lord…
Then the God who guards you is calling your name today.
Say:
“Jesus, I trust You.
Save me.
Forgive me.
Make me new.
Be my Lord, my Saviour, my Shepherd, my Keeper.”
Come to Him.
He will not reject you.
He will redeem you.
He will watch over you—now and forever.
BENEDICTION:
May the Lord who watches over Israel
watch over your coming and your going.
May His protective shade rest upon you.
May His peace guard your heart.
May His Spirit strengthen your steps.
And may Jesus Christ, your Saviour and Shepherd,
keep you in His grace
until the day He calls you home.
