A King’s Joy
Psalm 21:1-7
Intro.
Psalm 20 was “An Anthem of Prayer”
Prayed before going into battle
Pray before going into hard times.
Psalm 21 is a “An Anthem of Praise”
A song for after the battle
A song of joy and praise.
The king here is King David.
He is rejoicing in God blessing and goodness,
We can rejoice with him
I. Joy in God’s Strength. Vs. 1a
A. David recognized that his strength in battle came from the Lord.
B. How often we are told that God all strengthen us to do whatever he has called us to do.
Is. 41:10 ¶ Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee;
yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
C. The very presence of God will give us strength
Josh. 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be
thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
II. Joy in God’s Salvation. Vs. 1b
A. Here David was speaking of being saved in battle.
B. We ought to rejoice every day for the salvation wehave in Christ.
1. He forgave us our sin
2. He redeemed us.
3. He gave us a home in heaven
Is. 61:10 ¶ I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath
clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
III. Joy in answered prayer. Vs. 2
A. Our hearts desire.
Psa. 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
1. He heats desire was for victory.
2. Enjoy your relationship with God
B. God answered every prayer.
Jeremiah 33:3Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou
knowest not.”
Phil. 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known unto God.
IV. Joy in God’s Blessing. Vs. 3a, 6
A. “Prevents” - to go before
B. God want’s to bless us.
C. God has blessed us so abundantly
D. God had great blessings in store for you.
V. Joy in Gained Rewards
A. A reward for his victory.
B. Revelations tells that one day we will also wear crowns of gold. (Rev. 4:4)
VI. Joy in Life. Vs 4
A. In this case, David was rejoicing that God had spared his life in battle.
B. When we trust Christ, the Lord promises us
abundant life. Vs. 4a
C. When we trust Christ, the Lord promises us
eternal life. Vs. 4b
VII. Joy in God’s glory. Vs. 5
A. Our ultimate purpose in life is to bring Glory to God.
Psa. 29:2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
B. God’s glory is “great” in our salvation
C. All honour and majesty belong to Him.
VII. Joy in God’s presence. Vs 6
A. God has made us “most” blessed.
B. Exceeding glad in His presence.
1. “Countenance” - in his face.
2. In his direct presence, as though he’s lookin
right at us.
a. Presence in a crowd is one thing
b. This is direct presence - face to face.
IX. Joy in Trusting God Vs. 7
A. David trusted in the Lord.
B. “Trust” - total dependence.
C. Confidence
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy
ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
X. Joy in Praising God. Vs. 13
A. Be thou exalted - lifted up to the highest place.
B. So…we will sing. (This song)
C. And praise
1. More than just saying the words “praise the
Lord”
2. Talking about Him and his goodness towards us.
Psa. 86:12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for
evermore.
Conclusion:
God gives us much to rejoice about.
Phil. 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
Psa. 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
