Title: The God of the Impossible
Theme: God can do the impossible if we believe it is possible.
Text: 2 Kings 6:1 - 7
. . . MADE THE IRON FLOAT. — 2 K I N G S 6 : 6
2 Kings 6:1-7 And the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, "See now, the place where we dwell with you is too small for us. (2) Please, let us go to the Jordan, and let every man take a beam from there, and let us make there a place where we may dwell." So he answered, "Go." (3) Then one said, "Please consent to go with your servants." And he answered, "I will go." (4) So he went with them. And when they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. (5) But as one was cutting down a tree, the iron ax head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, "Alas, master! For it was borrowed." (6) So the man of God said, "Where did it fall?" And he showed him the place. So he cut off a stick, and threw it in there; and he made the iron float. (7) Therefore he said, "Pick it up for yourself." So he reached out his hand and took it.
Introduction
To me this is the most incredible story in the Bible. The prophets were getting together to “build a house”. “Doing the work of the Lord”. One of the helpers was working the axe head falls off. Interesting is this has happened to me. When I did not “tighten” up the ax head enough. They must have been working near the water because it fell in the water. Guess what it did, “it sunk down”. What else would you expect but that?
Matthew 19:26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
The axe head seemed hopelessly lost, and as it was borrowed, the honor of the prophetic band was likely to be imperiled, and so the name of their God to be compromised. Contrary to all expectation, the iron was made to mount from the depth of the stream and to swim; for things impossible with man are possible with God.
For God to the do the impossible we have to believe that it is possible. We have to have enough faith in God that there is something possible.
Israel at the Red Sea – Caught Between a Rock and a Hard place – Exodus 14
Behind them is Pharoah king of Egypt
Beside them are the mountains
Ahead of them is the red sea.
They were in an impossible situation. It had to looked that way.
Moses raised his staff in the air and declared to the God who could do the impossible
Walls of Jericho – Obstacle to victory – Joshua 6
Praise makes the walls fall
Josaphat and the Army – 2 Chronicles 20
Jehosophat and the Army – from all fronts. From the nations of Moab, Ammon and others.
Jehoshaphat 2 Chronicle 20:12 “our eyes are fixed on you”
God turned the enemy against itself. 1000’s of people died that day.
Raising the Dead: Lazarus from the dead – John 11
Mary & Martha “Lord if you had been here our brother would not have died”
Jesus “Yeah but I am the resurrection and the life”
Mary & Martha “I know I know that there is going to be a resurrection one day, you will lead it”.
Jesus “Yeah but I am here with you right now. I am in the room I am in the house.
When Jesus is in the house “you can ask anything in My name, and I will do it.”
When Jesus in the house you just have to have the faith the grain of a mustard seed and this mountain has to move.
God is a God who can make the ax head float.
God is a God who can put your marriage back together
God is a God who can put your finances back together.
God is a God who can save your children.
Conclusion
Matthew 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
From Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening
“Beloved reader, what is your desperate case? What heavy matter have you to deal with this evening? Bring it here. The God of the prophets lives, and lives to help His saints. He will not suffer you to lack any good thing. Believe in the Lord of hosts! Approach Him pleading the name of Jesus, and the iron shall swim; you too shall see the finger of God working marvels for His people. According to your faith be it unto you, and yet again the iron shall swim.”
