Go! And Experience the Depth of God’s Love - Romans 5:8
Introduction:
Love is a word that is often used but seldom understood in its truest depth. Human love can be flawed, conditional, and inconsistent. But the love of God is beyond human comprehension—it is unconditional, sacrificial, and unchanging.
Today, we will explore three powerful verses that reveal the depth of God’s love: Romans 5:8, John 3:16, and 1 John 4:10.
These verses declare the overwhelming, never-ending, and all-encompassing love of God that calls us to respond in faith and devotion.
1. God’s Love is Unconditional – Romans 5:8
“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8, NLT)
This verse speaks of God’s initiative in loving us. The Greek word for "showed" (s???st?s??, synístesin) means "to demonstrate, to prove." God did not wait for us to be righteous before He loved us—He loved us while we were still sinners.
In Romans 5, Paul contrasts the fallen state of humanity with the justifying work of Christ. This verse highlights that Christ's sacrifice was made before we ever chose to love Him. It was proactive, not reactive.
Human love often depends on conditions. We love those who love us. But God’s love is different—it is agape love, a love that gives without expecting anything in return.
This verse shatters the idea that we must earn God’s love. It reminds us that salvation is entirely based on God’s grace.
Have you accepted God’s love, or are you still trying to earn it? Accept that He already loves you fully.
Imagine a parent who loves a rebellious child, not because of their behaviour but because they are their child. That is how God loves us—even in our sin, He pursues us with relentless love.
Ephesians 2:4-5 – “But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)”
This reinforces that salvation is an act of love and grace, not something we earn.
2. God’s Love is Sacrificial – John 3:16
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NLT)
This verse is spoken by Jesus Himself as He explains to Nicodemus the necessity of being born again. The Greek word for "loved" (??ap??, agapáo) speaks of divine love—love that is selfless and sacrificial.
God’s love is not just an emotion; it is an action. He gave His Son. Love is measured by what it gives, and God gave us the most valuable gift—Jesus.
The sacrifice of Jesus is the highest expression of God’s love. The cross is not just a historical event but a demonstration of divine love.
Have you truly received and responded to this sacrificial love? Believing in Jesus is not just intellectual agreement but a surrender to His lordship.
If someone donated an organ to save your life, how grateful would you be? How much more should we appreciate the sacrifice of Jesus?
1 John 3:16 – “We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.”
If God’s love is sacrificial, our love should also be sacrificial.
3. God’s Love is the Source of True Love – 1 John 4:10
“This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” (1 John 4:10, NLT)
John reminds the early church that love originates with God. We did not love Him first; He loved us first.
The Greek word for "sacrifice" (??asµ??, hilasmós) means "atoning sacrifice." Jesus’ death satisfied God’s justice and revealed His love.
Love begins with God. If we understand His love, we can truly love others.
Are you sharing God’s love with others? As recipients of His love, we must love others selflessly.
A lamp cannot shine without a power source. In the same way, we cannot truly love without being connected to God.
1 John 4:19 – “We love each other because he loved us first.”
God’s love empowers us to love others genuinely.
Conclusion: Responding to God’s Love
God’s love is unconditional, sacrificial, and the source of true love. He has demonstrated His love through Jesus Christ. How will you respond?
If you have never accepted Christ, today is the day. His love is available to you.
If you are struggling to feel loved, rest in the truth that God’s love never changes.
If you have received His love, go and share it with others.
