The Certainty of Judgment and the Hope of Salvation Hebrews 9:27-28
Introduction:
As we gather today, let us ponder the profound truths found in Hebrews 9:27-28. This passage confronts us with the certainty of judgment and the hope of salvation through Jesus Christ. Let us explore this scripture and discover how it transforms our understanding of eternity and compels us to respond in faith.
Point 1: The Certainty of Judgment (Hebrews 9:27)
"For just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment," (Hebrews 9:27, NLT)
The writer of Hebrews presents a sobering reality: each of us will face death and subsequently stand before God in judgment. Death is an inescapable appointment for every human being, regardless of status or wealth. And beyond death awaits a judgment that is both certain and impartial. This truth compels us to examine our lives and consider the eternal consequences of our choices.
Ecclesiastes 12:14: "God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad."
This verse underscores the universal nature of judgment. It serves as a reminder that our lives are accountable to God, and He will judge us based on our deeds, both seen and unseen. It challenges us to live with a sense of urgency, knowing that our time on earth is limited and that we will one day give an account of our actions before the Creator.
Point 2: The Hope of Salvation (Hebrews 9:28)
"...so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him." (Hebrews 9:28, NLT)
Amidst the certainty of judgment, there is hope found in the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ. He offered Himself as the perfect atonement for our sins, securing salvation for all who believe in Him. His sacrifice was sufficient to reconcile us to God and to grant us eternal life. Moreover, His promise to return brings hope to believers, as we eagerly anticipate His second coming and the fulfilment of His redemptive work.
Titus 2:13: "While we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, will be revealed."
This verse emphasises the efficacy of Christ's sacrifice and the assurance of salvation for those who place their faith in Him. It points to the future hope of Christ's return, a day when all believers will experience the fullness of salvation and eternal fellowship with God. This hope sustains us in times of trial and reminds us of the ultimate victory we have in Christ.
Point 3: The Call to Response (Hebrews 9:28)
"...to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him." (Hebrews 9:28, NLT)
The writer concludes by highlighting the response required of believers: to eagerly await the return of Christ. This is not a passive waiting but an active anticipation characterised by faith, obedience, and readiness. As we await His coming, we are called to live holy and godly lives, proclaiming the gospel to a lost world and eagerly anticipating the fulfilment of God's kingdom.
2 Peter 3:11-12: "You should live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming."
This verse challenges believers to live with a sense of urgency and expectancy, knowing that Christ's return is imminent. It calls us to actively participate in God's redemptive plan by living as faithful witnesses and ambassadors of His kingdom. Our response to the hope of salvation should be marked by readiness and anticipation, as we eagerly await the glorious return of our Lord.
Application and Call to Action:
As we contemplate the certainty of judgment and the hope of salvation, let us:
Reflect on the state of our hearts and lives in light of God's impending judgment.
Place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ as the only means of salvation.
Live with eager anticipation of Christ's return, actively proclaiming the gospel and living as faithful followers of Him.
May this truth transform our lives and compel us to live with eternal perspective, eagerly awaiting the day when we will see our Saviour face to face. Amen.
