Introduction
Dynamic Duo – Illustration
Look at the screen with me and see if you can name the dynamic duos here. (I had a picture of many dynamic duos over the years batman and robin, bonnie and clyde, lighting mcqueen and mater, etc)
I believe that this is what God was creating in the first two chapters of Genesis.
Now look with me at the book of Genesis.
If you would turn in your Bibles to the book of Genesis. Genesis is very appropriately found in the first book of the Bible. The word Genesis means “beginning”. In this book we see the beginning of many things. I believe therefore the book is so important. I also believe it is the reason this book is attacked more than any other book in the Bible.
In Genesis we learn of creation. Where did it all begin. In Genesis we learn of sin and rebellion. In Genesis we learn of redemption. How God is gong to save the world. From Genesis 3:15 to the safety of an ark. In Genesis we learn of God’s long-term plan. Why the Middle East is the most controversial and attacked place in the world.
In Genesis we learn of relationship and marriage. Look with me now to Genesis 2.
Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."
Helper – aid, to come along side
Genesis 2:19-20 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. (20) So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
This is an interesting statement. Was there an expectation that these animals would be a help meet. Or was God showing us the importance of connection and relationship.
Genesis 2:21-22 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. (22) Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
This is interesting that God would take a rib out of Adam to create Eve. He could have done the exact same thing to Eve as he did to Eve. But instead of creating her out of the ground he used Adam’s rib. Why? I believe that Adam needed to understand that she came from him. She was of his kind and likeness.
Genesis 2:23-25 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." (24) Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Jesus Matthew 19 & Mark 10) (25) And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Thought 1. The order and relationship between man and woman are clearly shown in this Scripture: woman...
• was created for man
• was created out of man
• was presented to man
But again: the point of this passage is not to declare some supposed superiority of man over woman. The point is to declare that God created a partner for man, a partner who was desperately needed in order to carry out the will of God for the earth. The partnership is between two equal persons and beings, but their functions and purposes upon earth differ.
"Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well" (1 Tim. 3:12).
"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord" (Ephes. 5:22).
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it" (Ephes. 5:25).
"Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation [behavior] of the wives" (1 Peter 3:1).

One Family
Thought 1. Note two significant things about the family as an institution.
1) God established the family as the first institution of society. He will later establish the worship center (tabernacle, temple, and church) and the government.
2) All institutions of society find their roots in the family. The home gave rise...
It is where it all begins with the family
• to government: when rules and laws were needed between families and tribes.
Respect or disrespect of the governmental institution starts with the family. Trust or mistrust.
• to worship: when the need for fellowship with God and for instruction of children arose.
Respect of God and worship begins with the family.
• to education: when the need to instruct and teach children arose.
True education begins with the family. It should never be regulated to public schooling but should be partnered with.
• to health care: when the physical care of the family members arose.
Hygiene and health care begins in the family .
(This idea is taken from James Montgomery Boice. Genesis, An Expositional Commentary, Vol.1, p.113.)

There are just some things you cannot regulate.
And it all begins with two people coming together to be one. The institution of marriage is another principle that has been attacked as much as others.
Why? Because the enemy knows what happens when two people come together. The enemy knows what happens when two people come together in unity and agreement.
Two are better than one, then there was three
Ecclesiastes 4:12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Unity is fearful to the enemy because he knows that if two people work together then they pray together. They are stronger together. This is why I call this the dynamic duo.
Psalms 127:1-5 A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. (2) It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep. (3) Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. (4) Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. (5) Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.
Marriage as a contract or a covenant
Marriage is not a contract “If they do this, then I’ll do that.” People enter into contracts because of what they get out of them. When they no longer receiver what they want, or if they find a better-looking option, then they will justify termination.”
Umbrella Illustration – Protection and boundaries
When a husband and wife live out a covenant marriage instead of contractual terms, they receive a covering. It’s like an umbrella. When it’s raining, the umbrella doesn’t stop the rain, but stops it from raining on you” – Tony Evans
Conclusion
This morning I challenge you to see your marriage differently. This person you are “tied” to is there to complete and fulfill you. They are there to make you stronger. The more you resist growing together then the less likely hood of being powerful.
